Sorry about the newbie question. I recently have been on a mission buying stuff for my new first kayak, and I have the feeling that I might be overdoing it as I usually do when I get into a new hobby, so I want to be a little careful and ask for some advise first.

I already got a plastic fish grip and a gaff, should I also buy a landing net? If yes, is this Promar Trophy Series 20 in. Collapsible Landing Net a good choice? https://www.austinkayak.com/products/5003/Promar-Trophy-Series-20-in-Collapsible-Landing-Net.html

It is collapsible, which makes it easy to store inside the yak when not fishing. But I am not sure if it is sturdy or large enough for ling or salmon. Thanks in advance.

Landing net is a requirement for some species.

You must have a net with a minimum 18" diameter opening when fishing in the ocean.

That Promar net is sweet, but you are not going to want to fish with it collapsed. It's cool for transport, but will be nearly impossible to open while fighting or landing a fish that requires the net.

If you are planning to fish rockfish or salmon, go with the biggest net you can carry. It would suck to lose a personal best while trying to fumble a big fish over the lip of the net.

+1  This is very good advice, and the hard way to learn it is by losing a great fish.  Best of luck.   :smt001

The promar collapsible is good for smaller fish.  anything over 10lbs and you are asking for it to break.  A big 30" aluminum will do you great for big ling, salmon and stripers.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Can you give some specific nets to buy?

So when should I use the gaff? Isn't it for large fish?

A big Frabill or other large landing net - ask for a "big salmon net", and don't be afraid to max it out.

Leave the gaff at home, IMO.  I used to gaff lingcod, but the large net has proven to allow for better success.

Well built nets, easy to extend and the heads are removable/replaceable for whatever species your fishing, including a gaff. Easy to transport and they float.

These nets seem great and the optional gaff head could be used to snag crab floats/lines.

Thanks much Eric and Mike, I just ordered a large sized EGO S2 net. It is good to know the net will float, and the extension mechanism is really fancy. I just hope it will last when used in saltwater.
