I'm not a fly fisherman, but I know that the ISE in Sac next week has free lessons for those wanting to learn. They are pretty friendly and will answer pretty much anything you throw at them.

Jake, pm me your number and I'll call you. I teach people and would be more than willing to help you out. All I do is fly fish. I enjoy introducing new people to the sport. I can help you with all your needs.

Jake, once we get some rain I can teach you how to cast a Spey rod(2-handed fly rod).
I'm sure we could meet on the river with a few other peeps to get you started.

Echo, redington and TFO are great companies with good beginner rods and sell combo kits

Scott knows his stuff.

One piece of advice I'd give, don't buy a beginner crap combo. I had one from Walmart, it sucked.
I have a good rod and reel now, check out the Redington reels at Cabelas. Just got one, half off. Love it!
And of course remember the line is what's important. Without good line it sucks.
Rio was also on sale at Cabelas ....50% off.

I'm also interested learning to fly fish.  Maybe Scott can put on a clinic some time?  If so, I'll bring something from the smoker for the potluck.  (There WILL be a potluck, right?)

I'd be down for doing a clinic, I can show you how to cast and what I recommend with gear. I prefer TFO rods for the price and the great no questions asked warranty.  Fly fishing is kind of easy once you understand the basics. A good day for me would be Saturday the 18th. We could meet at a lake then fish afterwards. Or if your going to be at Crabfest I could do a clinic on Saturday there. Let me know what you all think. Once a date is decided I'll make a post to invite anyone and everyone.

+1, those are the companies I would recommend too. You can try used also, I haven't bought a new single hander in a very long time since I spend all my money on spey rods now. I've had quite a few echo and TFO rods, mostly spey or switch rods.  Great actions, for me weight is the biggest difference, you need to be quite a good caster to take advantage of the new super fast rods.

If you don't buy a complete packaged setup and assuming were talking about a freshwater, spend your money on the rod and line combo not the reel.

Tim, you get to move to the front of the line for lessons.  You hooked me up big time with my sweet ride.

I'll post a hookup for a fly fishing clinic at Crabfest with times and what I plan to go over.  But you are always welcome to find me that weekend and ask for info or anything in regards to fly fishing.  I'll be there Friday through Monday, pray for no wind!!
