Hi all,

My son and I have tried to fish from our yak at Lafayette Reservoir a couple of times now to no avail.  About two weeks ago, we saw a good size school of trouts on our FF near the south end, but we could not get them to touch our hooks.  We were there for almost 2 hrs.  However, another gentleman I talked to said he limited out with no problem.  Obviously, the issue here is our techniques.

We used 6lb test line, treble hook with powerbait pebbles (green), and 1/2oz weight.  What I notice is that the line often gets pulled north quickly, possibly due to the pump flow.  We tried to troll with kastmaster (silver, gold) and never had a bite.

Any help will be appreciated as we are still waiting for our first fish there.  Thanks.

Dave

Dave,

I like to drift around the south end, although I have done well on the east docks as well in the past. I use 6 lb main line, with a 1/4 sinker to a snap swivel. then I tie on a 2 lb leader, you may get away with 4 but 6 is too much unless you're trolling. 2 feet if 2 lb leader to a mosquito hook (#8). now put on some power bait, inflated worm, or power eggs/ power worm combo and drift with the wind at a slow pace. good luck!

SPR is probably better fishing right now. Since there hasn't been any rain, it probably isn't the mudhole yet.

Wait till they plant it with Lassen trout. You can drift from the south end with nightcrawlers n baby mallows but I myself prefer anchoring between the 2 buoys.

My luck has been quite variable at LR.  I can usually troll up one or two with a Kastmaster or a firetiger rapala.  My favorite lure there has been a little round vibrator thingie I can't remember the name of.  I'll look it up.

But I think the guys who get regular limits do it on PowerBait.  My last limit was one on the troll, followed by four on PowerBait at the extreme east end.  But that was a day when everybody was catching them like mad in the east end.

My biggest fish was about 6 lb, on one of my lures while I was just high-tailing it back to the dock after about 5 hours with nothing!  So stick with it and you'll get some.

Good luck.  Maybe I'll see you there soon.

What Rshu said.

Or give a chunk of nightcrawler under a bobber a shot. About 4' under the bobber can work too. Back side has always been where I've done ok.

... guess it was closer to 8 lb.  Lure = "Snap Bean".  See pic in this post:

Hi all,

With all the tule in the bottoms, how far do you let the line out?   Another issue here is the draft created by the pump flow.  We can never keep our lines straight even with 1/2oz weight when dropping power bait.

According to the DFW web site, another plan of trouts is coming the week of Jan 12th.

I just cast out or even drop my line down right below the boat or kayak. as long as you have a slow drift you can cover a good area and if the trout are around they will see your offering. you can tie on a longer leader if you think there is more vegetation or the drift is too fast. use your trolling motor or paddles if on a kayak to slow or speed up your drift. when you see your pole do the tap tap and dance you have a fish on, as opposed to the steady bounce of dragging the bottom. hope this helps you and your kid get on some fish! I've seen a 10 pounder caught in that lake...
