Some of the veteran Sac locals met up to celebrate the new year and to kickoff AOTY 2014.

I arrived at the launch ten munites past seven to find Weimarian, Insearchoffish, Sandbag and his buddy ready to launch.  After some brief banter the first wave of Sac competitors hit the water.

By the time I got on the water TxBoyESR had arrived, and we were soon joined by Rockfish and a slightly hungover Naoaki  :smt001

The weather was near perfect, and the water was packed with bait.  As I made my way to my favorite trolling section bait started jumping all around me and my fishfinder registered thick clouds of smelt throughout the productive section of the lake.

Despite all the bait in the water, not bite was to be had in the early morning.  To make matters worse, 30 or so divers from a local club decided to take their New Year dive in the middle of our fishing hole. There were so many divers that some opted to kick the half mile from the launch instead of waiting for the zodiac shuttles.

With the fishing area overcrowded, several of us regrouped at the launch and decided to scout some potential new trout spots at a less familiar section of the lake.

The scouting mission was a bust, but on our way back to the fishy section Insearchoffish landed and released an 18inch fatty rainbow, and Rockfish caught a clean looking juvenile with par marks suggestive of a naturally reproducing population in the lake.

In the late morning the bite turned on.  Sandbag's buddy (soon to be a new member) landed a monster 26inch, 12lb rainbow. While not as impressive as the 12 lb beast, I hooked, landed and released 3 trout between 14 and 18 inches.

The bite turned off shortly thereafter, and most of the gang made their way back to the launch. Naoaki and I decided to fish until sunset, but the evening passed without a bite.

Today was a great day with some old and new friends.  It was especially cool for Sandbag to put his buddy on a PB trout, and in so doing converting yet another to kayak fishing.

I have the feeling that this is just the first of many great sac crew hookups of 2014.

Kick-ass report Adam!  Man, those are some of the fattest 'bows I've ever seen  :smt007.  Massive, beautiful fish.

Nomination for January Report of the Month anyone?

Nice!! Me and my buddy Martin got out there around noonish, put in and, not knowing the water, turned away from the canyon instead of into it, we had no idea how to fish it, but had a nice tour of the area, got to see a couple of cuties in spandex, not a total loss <LOL> :smt003
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Awesome day to start off the new year, didn't get a bite myself but still had a great time, weather was perfect. The amount of bait in the water was amazing, never marked and seen bait that thick there before...
