Thinking about making my own stake out pole but I have no idea where to start. Any recommendations? Length? Materials? Am I better off just buying one?

I ask why? they don't go very deep. Use an anchor in fresh water instead just my opinion.

I really only fish freshwater (I have yet to fish anything else) and I mainly fish for bass a lot of pre spawn spawn and post spawn bass are caught in super shallow water I guess I could toss out and anchor but I just don't see the point when I am in 1-5 feet of water

Ive definately been in situations where a stake out pole would have been a heck of a lot easier then dropping anchor. Ive been looking at DIY Videos and suggestions on other boards and the consesus seems to be that store bought is the way to go.

You could look into golf ball retrievers. Some people say they work ok.

When I lived in Fresno I had several that I tried to make.  best one was a long1.5" wood shower pole sharpened on the tip and wrapped with thin cord for grip in the center and upper section.
It was a lot of work to make and only lasted about 2 years.
after all that if I thought I would use one very much I would buy one.
good luck

I actually made one and use it for shark fishing in the south bay when the tide are low (like 2 feet or water). I just use one of these from home depot (tree stake) light simple push it into the muck and slide a line over it.

Like the green plastic kind? Doesn't it flex?

It has a thin metal liner so you can pound it into the ground. Actually I think some flex is good when anchored in any fashion

I have been using an old fiberglass deep sea rod with the lower handle removed. It a little short for me at 5' long, found myself eather pinded up against the cover I was trying to fish or to close to obstructions while casting. Seams like another couple feet would help a lot so I made one that is 8' long. 3/4" fiberglass rod with stainless tip, cap, Collar, and a para cord rapped handle. I have used it once, seams to do the trick. I keep it attached to my anchor trolley, and stowed and secured  in the oar notch on the side of the yak. Unclip it and stick it, done just that fast.

RipnLip,

That's a nice pole set-up. I usually end up wedging myself into the flooded trees or tying a small rope to a branch. Sometimes it works and sometimes not so good depending on how the boat settles out.

Thanks MistralWind. I fish a lot of shallow water. Just seams easyer than messing with an anchor rope.
