Ooter1, Anglerfish, and myself are planning on fishing for Lings on the last day of the season.  We have to launch from the launch ramp and will be on ch. 69.  Don't forget to bring your swim baits.  That's the hot bait right now.

Hey NCKA Brohers,

I am also planning to go out at HMB on the 31st if the ocean is not too rough or windy. I usually launch on the North Side of the Bay next to CA Canoe and Kayak and the HMB yacht club. It's a short distance to the water and faster to get out the harbor gate. My kayak is pretty heavy and it it's a bitch to haul it for a long distance, even with wheels.

My name is Michael Yamagata (Da Brudah) and I will be in a RED Hobie Mirage Oasis Tandem kayak. I don't have a radio but I can be reached on my cell# 510-282-4831 and will have it with me in the kayak.

How many of you are going our and what color and kind of kayaks do you have?

Will look for you guys when I get out and hope to connect and catch some fish!!!

Take Care,

Michael Yamagata

Hi Michael,
It should be nice out there.  Low swells and light wind if any.   There will be at least 3 of out there and maybe CK and my buddy Dave in a Boston Whaler too.  My brother and I will be in Pro Anglers and Anglerfish (Marco) will be in an orange outback.  My PA is white and my brothers is green.  I have a big orange flag so I am easy to find.  I'll call you tomorrow  with more info.

Yes the weather is looking pretty decent for the last day of the year.  Not sure if I'll launch from the old pier though.  There is a negative tide later in the afternoon which can make it tough to haul out at that location.  I'll be goofing off in a dune AI and on Ch-69.

Good luck to you all going fishing.

This might be somewhat of a noob questions, but what websites / sources do you all use for evaluating whether conditions will be good or not?  I've generally always used wetsand.com (swellwatch) to look at swell, wind / period, etc. and how much of a slacktide there will be.  That website doesn't seem to have a tremendous amount of detail on the HMB area in particular since it's drawing from the buoy out at Mavericks.  For example, when I look at it and see a 9+ ft swell on 12/31, it makes me think that conditions will be a bit rough?  Any insights / comments?  Does paddling out from the harbor and having the breakwall there mean the swell is generally not that big of a deal and you guys are mainly looking at the wind predictions?

Either way - I'll probably get stubborn and head out there tomorrow to try for crabs (although a few days ago I went and it was pretty crappy (I didn't go beyond the yellow buoy).  I'm in a green Ocean Kayak - Caper.  Maybe I'll see you guys around!

Mark and I will be there.  We were gonna launch from the old pier, but Camodon you're right, it was b*tch pulling them out thru the mud yesterday, so we will also be launching from HMB kayaks

+1. Be careful out there guys. I've never seen HMB with those nasty sneaker waves till yesterday. It can be somewhat calm then change in an instant.

Happy New Year everyone.
Sorry for the late response, I'm working on a video that's still in progress.  My Brother Brian and I got there at sunrise and saw CamoDon on his way to the ramp with his AI.  We hooked up with DaBruddah (Michael) on the way out and stuck together for most of the day.  On the way out, we dropped his crab pot and headed out to the reef outside of the green can.  It was a little swelly with light winds in the morning.  Using my GPS map on my FF, I found the reef I wanted to target.  I marked the spot with my marker buoy to use as a reference point when setting up a drift.  The morning bite was sort of slow, only 3 underlings.  The wind was picking up and by noon, not enough to whitecap but pushed you great distances each drift.  There was a lot of mileage put on going up and back to the marker buoy.  Michael left us to pick up his crab pot while my Brother wanted to continue.  My friend Dave and CK came by to fish with us in Dave's PB.  Using Big Hammer Swimbaits, Brian and I scratched out Lingcod limits to 10 lbs. On the way in Michael calls me and says he can't find his crab pot.  He's been searching all that time.  I had marked the spot on my gps and went to the spot.  It was not there or anywhere in sight.   That's not the way to end the year.
