Fishing kayaks sure seem to be taking a disproportionate number of hits.  Would that be because of the fish finder or the faint chemical traces of violent fish deaths ,  a combination? Other? Coincidence?

Dolphins use 75 to 150 hz approx.

Fishfinder is 50 to 200 hz

Gws hears up to 800 hz

Does anyone know how many of the violent shark attacks have been on yaks with fish finders in use?

I believe 6 of the 7 attacks were running sonar. The non-NCKA guy in June in Pacifica from the pictures was not running sonar. I think we get hit because we fish in areas where there are seals and inside the red triangle and during the inshore shark season august to December. Yum yum yellow mirage drive and sonar has nothing to do with it. There are more kayakers out there so there will be more attacks. It's a probability issue.

Here are some statistics http://sharkresearchcommittee.com/statistics.htm

Rockfish season used to close in Oct each year. So we weren't OTW as much in Nov-Dec. Now it's open til Dec 31. Something to consider with these recent encounters.

I doubt it has anything to do with a ff since boats run them too.  ID say shape/size over sound.  Add is some drizzling fish blood & bait leaking from the scuppers and we have a winner.

Too bad we couldnt use the canary in a coal mine principle.......instead using a seal on a leash for an indicator..... when the seal starts flippin out, get the go-pros ready to roll......  really, glad everyone is ok and safe.

I think it would be illegal to put a seal on a leash unless you could get it to sign a consent form regarding possible encounters with GWS's.
A fellow with a morbid, insensitive, sense of humor might make a comment about how effective a brother in law in a smaller kayak is...but not me, no way!
On a serious note though I want to thank you all for the support. I want to keep an eye on him and make sure he is ok. Once we are confident there will be no issues he may be willing to share details from his perpsective.
I am not going out on the kayak until I get back home since I do not have a kayak buddy, or even a spare kayak to put a buddy on down here. If I did I would walk the 10' to the saltwater and start paddling for the jetty.
I do have my fly rod and will be hitting the beach.

Not sure how long you'll be down there but my brother, 1b-1s-1b, lives in Moorpark and goes out often at the kiddie beach there in Channel Islands Harbor. I think he is a member here.

Shouldn't there be a special color or title for someone whom has experienced a GWS attack. Something similar to administrator tag no extra privileges though.

Yo Pozo,

Dang that is scary, was just trying to decide if I should go shore fishing or go to HMB solo yak......that settles it I'll wait for my Yak buddy to return from vacation and go for a little PFIC style action today.

Also this post is not in the "members only section" and I just saw it because I was to lazy too log in. I'll make a short post over there as well, I suspect the other members would like to know about this.

Thanks for the post and I am sure glad it was only the plastic that got bit.

Cheers,

-Tsuri

Good ending to this Christmas story......

Pozo, auction the damaged kayak. I'm sure someone would pay for a "real life shark attacked yak."

You could make a seal decoy out of plywood like the researchers do.  :smt005

All joking aside, you should report the attack when you have some time.
