Gotta love unemployment.

I had some old friends in town and they wanted to go fishing, so I said "screw it" let's go to Pillar Point!!!

After seeing the crazy 6-8' swells, they decided against going out in my dad's ocean inflatable and just rock fish the jetty. I wasn't going to turn down the opportunity to take my Hobie out and see how she handled the rough seas (and I was inspired when I saw a paddle boarder heading out the mouth of the harbor!).

I got my traps in the water, checked a couple of times to make sure I was in dungie land, not rock crab land, and headed back in to the safety of the jetty. I got a couple of nibbles fishing the jetty, but the fishing was a little frustrating. Lots of fishing, very little biting. Earlier in the season, I was able to put a big hook with a tiny piece of worm out and catch kingfish after kingfish. Today, nothing.

I went out again to check my traps and was hoping I'd have close to my limit. The first one I pulled up had 5 keepers!!! Woo hoo! I took 4 and let the 5.76" one go, hoping my other pots would be full. They weren't. I got one each from the others, so I moved them closer to the first trap. By the time I was done moving them, the first trap had three more. By the time I could pull the other two up, I had my ten and it was time to go in! Total crabbing time was about two hours.

It was a lot more work than it was last week, seems it's slowed down a bit and it was tough going with the large waves! But, the weather was amazing, there was a beautiful sunset, and that fish-trap place has the best fish and chips on planet earth.

Once again, no pics, so it never happened. My stupid cell phone camera quit working about 6 months ago... I know, convenient excuse.

Man, I'd love to buy a house down there! Pillar Point is a little piece of paradise!

Congrats on your catches.  You may want to buddy up with somebody going out in the ocean.

Tony,

You're fast turning into a dungee magnet.
Congrats on the sweet haul.
BTW, I 2nd FishingAddict friendly reminder on buddying up. It's always good to do so.

Yes, I realize that I'm playing with fire going out there alone... I do obviously have PFD and wetsuit when I'm out there, and also passed the Marine Corps expert swimming course. Buddying up is one of the reasons I joined this community. It really wasn't so bad within 200 yards or so from the jetty, and that's why I went ahead and fished it.

Nope... my Marine Navigation app has an SOS button that contacts the coast guard with my location, and my phone is always fully charged and tethered to my lifejacket in a waterproof case.
