just wondering if anyone has been launching pots off there kayaks in the santa cruz area for crabs? if so would love to tag along sometime and would love to have some help buying the gear needed to do so... thx Joe P

I've done it a number of times. Had success with red rock crabs. Pretty far to try for dungeness. If you're up for some exercise it's a long paddle to get to where the crabs are. About 2 miles + gets you to 90-100 feet of water where it seems you can start finding crabs.



I chose to make my own traps, but the bait & tackle shop on crows nest side of santa cruz harbor sells a few types of traps and all the gear you would need.

I'll be going out a few times during the second week of january if you wanted to join the effort. My brother will be in town and we're thinking crab and sanddab or halibut for dinner.

If you can find sandy or muddy bottom, you can find dungies. When I find rock crab, I try a different spot. The dungies are the best eating by far.
