I caught 37 mini Tunas  :smt005   (aka: mackerals )  off Linda Mar today.  Yeah!!!  It was fun. They were all over.   Find the achovies and youll find them.   I used large sabukis made for mackerals and small jacks.  Lots of ancovie in deeper water (40+ feet).  No anhcovies bit on my sabuki but mini tunas were ripping them.  4 hooks, 4 fis at times.  Lots of kingfish metered also.  Caught a few of them on my rig  also.

I also caught an undersize Salmon on the sabuki   :smt001  (no kiddin.  it was 15-16 inches ;  dropped it before it got on boat.  so Im not sure if it was a silver or king.  That might be the only salmon Ill hook this year off Linda Mar.

Checked out the rocks on the northern end of Linda Mar. (thats normally too treacerous to fish but today was doable with much caution ).  Caught the biggest black I ever caught.  18 inches;  3 3/4 lbs.  Nothing else otherwise.  has anyone fished the rocks there?  caught anyting?

get out there if you want some mini tunas !!!  and a chance for salmon.   Oh.. I heard a few stripers were caught off the north end of beach this morning.

Saw a couple fellow kayakers today from a distance.  Wanted to go over to say hello to you guys, but I decided to try the  north end instead.

Too funny on the mini-salmon.  So, what is your recipe for the mackeral?  We need something better than just barbecuing.

Check the recipe section Seabreeze.

Zeelander has posted up 2 japanese style recipes for mackerel.  They seem to be all along the coast as Zeelander stuck his right off of capitola.

I too experienced some good mackerel action I let them go I didn't know they were good to eat

They do have those fins to wars their tale that resemble tuna !!!!

I went out with my buddy kip on the south side

We were probably the people you saw!

We landed some nice gopher rocks and 1 Cabezon

I also Believe I seen a Shark breach but I was 500-600 yards away so it could have been a whale

But it was real light in color

Unfortunately my brother in law who was with me didn't see it

Anyone else see anything???

Good job on all the mackeral.  Funny that When fishing on Friday I was trying to avoid the suckers. IMO they are pesky.  The last time I saw so many Mackeral was a very bad salmon year a while back.  Yesterday the water temperature was 61 in 60ft of water.

Gordon,
Nice catch!
I wonder if the same "greenback" mackerel is up this far north this year because of the warm water? They are the best bait for yellow tail tuna fising. Right now, you can catch a YT very easily in LaJolla. Even w/o any sinker, straight swivel to to hook to let that 6-10 inch bait cause a striike.
I'll try to get a pic of a greenback.
I like the large Sabiki with multi-colored squid skirts with gold glitter.

Not to be nit picky, but Yellow Tail are jacks, not tuna.  I miss that fish more than any other (well, maybe the spotted bay bass) since moving from SD to Santa Cruz.

I, too, get those confused in writing (not in person)

yellowtail:  jack
yellowfin:  tuna

This is why scientists use standardized names.

Lot and lots and lots of bait in LM bay. Don't know about Salmon but there is a ton of bait.

Craig,

If where you are has 59 + degree water, mackerals are likely there.
I like the large Sabiki too  with multi-colored squid skirts .  good for more than mackerals I think. (perch, cods, kingfish, salmon, etc)
