I haven't tasted our Pacific Coast Surf Smelt yet, but I would like to think the taste is somewhat like Alaska's Smelt.  I like mine battered then fried.  Yummy!  Eat them freshly fried and they melt in your mouth.  I kid you not. :smt106 :smt106 :smt106 :smt106 :smt106

They're like candy to little kids.
Taste great on the grill too!

Thanks!  I'll invite you to join and cook some next year if I get any from the family up north.

Can I get them Animal Style????

Only, if you show us the animal style dance.

Wow!  Do they taste better with or without the guts?  Tote!  Is that  Animal Style enough for you?
Rey.  Too bad they closed down Martin's beach.
I would enjoy catching some one of these days, if someone would show me the ropes?

My Mom used to cook them on the beach and feed them to us when we came out of the water.  She would get a bunch of long "twigs" and thread one though the tail then back through the head.  Then stick one end of the twig in the sand and roast them over the fire.  We would come out the surf to warm up by the fire  there would be a ring of fish around the fire.  We would grab a twig, unthread the fish, then holding the fish behind the head with one hand and pulling the head down and away with the other hand, the head and gut sack came away clean.  When you got a little practice you could get the spine and ribs too.  That was the best fish ever, and already with sea salt.

Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.
