Hopefully this post is in the right place
So here is the situation.... I am looking at buying my first kayak and I have finally decided on one (Jackson Kilroy). I have been to many different shops pricing them out and seams like they all are about the same in price, but one shop I went to offered me a $200 off discount, only problem is this shop isn't local (well it is CA local but not local as in in my home town) now, I love to support local small business but at the same time $200 off is $200 off.
My question is would it be rude or a jerk move to walk into the local shop (where I would rather spend my money) and ask if they are willing to match the price of the other shop?

It doesn't hurt to ask. Talk to Dan at Headwaters, he should be able to help you out.

Thanks I just didn't want to seam like a jerk walking in and demanding a discount. But at the same time I'm trying to buy a house right now so every penny counts and like I said $200 off is $200 off

I think it depends on how you ask. Your service will be better local and that is a decision you have to make. I did that on my truck but it was 10,000 difference. I told them to come with in 1000.00 I'd buy from them. They came closer 100.00.

+1
you do not loose anything when asking to match price (when I bought my recent cars i was approached by local dealerships with same requests to give them chance to match my lowest offer).

but if you are going to by Jackson  go to Dan's shop you would enjoy  great customer service and will support one of the NCKA supporters

Depends on if you are going to be doing the same move for accessories.  If a shop price matches $200 for you then you should buy your accessories from them without worrying about what the other stores are charging...and refer your friends to them without telling them about the price match...

There is nothing wrong with asking, but be willing to accept it when the say no. Some stores can offer specials based on buying deals and will offer these deals to customers like if you buy "x" amount of kayaks, you may get a discount or "x" amount of paddles free, others may not be able to buy in high volumes. Accept what each dealer can do, and make your decision on that. Also remember that there is more to your purchase than price. I would rather have a knowledgeable shop, with a good reputation for fallow up service, than save a few dollars.

Honestly I think either way I'm going to buy from the local shop but my thinking was I would use the $200 off to buy my paddle, I like to spend locally and support local businesses I understand that this means sometimes spending more and I'm ok with that

I dont think is rude your just trying to save a buck. I was at Mel cottons looking at two rifle scopes and found them for 60 buck less somewhere else and asked if they would price match and they did I saved 120.00. That was really cool they did that.

if you are looking to buy a new Jackson Kayak talk to Dan at Headwaters,  remember this very important fact. if you are going to be a part of this great group that means you will be fishing with him and also breaking bread with him. Dan has a lot of knowledge and is always willing to help you get better.
ask him for the discount, even if he does not match it dollar for dollar you will save a lot more on the long run including discounts in accessories, paddles, pfd, etc. and it is always good to keep the people that you know in business, besides, how much will you have to spend on gas to pick it up? and what is your time going there is worth?, you could be fishing with that time.
your decision this is just my 2 cents.

Not sure if I'm the local shop to you or not. I do know that we have spoken a few times and I feel like I have given you solid advice. My hope would be that you run deal by me before you buy somewhere else. Are you comparing 2014's or is the other shop selling an older model. FWIW we can't discount the brand without running risk of having our dealership pulled, but if your looking to save on a paddle I can set you up with a good quality paddle and save you money there. Plus I believe we are the only shop that offers free rigging if you buy you kayak from us. We work hard to support a lot of local event, and help out the club at every event we can. I hope that has some value as well.

I hope to hear from you soon.
