I heard that they only bite if you look at your reflection in the water and thrice repeat "Biggie Slabs".

If you get it wet, the ink washes off and you will have to pay $13.53 to replace it so don't get it wet. The state is messed up financially. For the amount of fishing a lot of us do, it doesn't seem unreasonable. I do think the length of the license is crazy though. With the steelhead thing I think it is over 4' long.

Its like gasoline you can bitch about the price but gonna pay for it anyway. What's the point? Go fish.

yeah, +1.

What I have to do is be sure to bring home at least 6 pounds of lingcod fillets to make the license pay for itself

I think I can attain that :smt005

Heck, one dungie limit comes pretty close too. Or a single halibut of 10 lbs..... :smt044

A co-worker has adopted a low-income family for Christmas this year.  She asked my advice on what to get the 16 year old boy in the family, my recommendation was of course a fishing rod/reel.  She though this was perfect, until I relayed he would also need to purchase a license to fish for $46.  Guess who is not getting a rod/reel this year?

Between fishing and hunting my annual license fees are close to $200, which is fine with me.  Versus a weekend in Reno, that's cheap entertainment!  My concern is the impact the high license cost is having on recruiting new anglers in our state.

Ben,

Good point on bringing new anglers into the sport.  If DFG wants to raise the price, then maybe they need to consider more "free" fishing days to help promote the sport.  Otherwise, the community runs the risk of people loosing interest in the sport (=lost money to them) or people are going to start fishing w/o a license & "chance" it.  Don't want to see wither happen.  There are areas where someone can fish w/o a license, but those areas (& the catch) is limited.

I can't understand it or figured it out myself but I like what Andy said, if you love it your still gonna pay it. Also, if u don't or didn't vote then you have nothing to bitch about. What actually pisses me off about about CA Dfw is that after raising the license and tags every year, along with more MPA's and less water and land to fish and hunt on every year, they have the Audacity to create a Warden stamp and ask for more money!  :smt013..I'm sorry but that's BUllshit to me. Do we need gamewardens? Of course. Someone's gotta stop poachers but by the looks of it they ain't hurting for $$$ either when there all driving brand new Chevrolets.

Understand your frustration Ricci but in the big picture, they aren't paid an exorbitant salary.  As an example, I considered a change in employment to become a DFW officer but after looking at their payscale, I quickly passed on the idea.  Take it for what it's worth coming from a teacher living in the bay area.

ATD would know more than me, but it might also just be the same stamp with a different name - this year it just happends to be a warden stamp.  Next year it might be a "wildlife stamp."  Also, do we know if the funds actually benefit DFW officers.  Or does it just go into a big pot?  Adam?

Heck, maybe the stamp will hire more wardens.  Glass half full optimist!  :smt003  :smt002

BTW, sorry for the threadjack.  Need to get my 2014 license.

I'm envious of those with lifetime licenses.  Every year my wife says I can get one the following year but when the time comes, she declines.

Cal F & G Code 13001(a) sets out a primary rule.

13001.  (a) Unless otherwise provided, all money collected under the provisions of this code and of any other law relating to the protection and preservation of birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, or amphibia shall be paid into the State Treasury to the credit of the Fish and Game Preservation Fund.

But then 13001(b) provides the Controller with discretion to "loan" to the general fund.  Hole so big you could drive a Boston Whaler through it.

   (b) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Controller may use the Fish and Game Preservation Fund for loans to the General Fund as provided in Sections 16310 and 16381 of the Government Code.

We should replace our brown bear state mascot with the fricking Icee polar bear, the way Sacto treats our $$ like slush!

Trust your government :smt005  I will pay the lic. fees, but that lifetime one looks beter & better each year....it's a gamble (like how much fishing grounds will be left for the common man in 20yrs or so)

It seems to go up every year (or every other year) by 2020 it'll probably be $100!  :smt009
