So im going on the queen of hearts out of hmb sunday. i wanted a new jig to lose out at sea. i didnt have money to get several so i bought one nice looking one made by braid. have you seen these?

http://braidproducts.com/catalog/p25.html

i plan on removing the triple and use one gamkatsu kevlar tied hook to the top of it. that is how i was running my butterfly jigs with success.

anyone out there used these jigs? i thought it looked nice and instead of getting the standard irons i thought i would try it for the colors. i will sure be sad if i lose it. this stuff can get emotional!

I love those jigs.

I've caught a lot of calicos down south on them.

Take off the bottom hook completely and run two Gamakatsu stinger hooks up front. That's how I've seen shimano's butterfly jigs modified. If you want to be safer, use circle hooks. The jig is going to get banged up regardless.
I woulda gone the cheaper swimbait route as you are going to lose rigs if you fish em properly. You lose this nice pretty expensive one, whatcha gonna do? Better get some shrimp flys for back up.

I use the Slammer all the time.  Tip it with squid and keep the treble on it.  Use braid line #30 lbs and a pretty strong rod.  I use a e-glass fenwick rated for 25 to 40lbs.  3 weeks ago lost 6 slammers at Half Moon Bay.  Last week lost one slammer.  I just used bait 2 weeks ago with a torpedo weight (4oz).  But, got no lings or cabbies.

When I use the slammers I get the bigger fish.  Fisherman's Warehouse was all out of the 4oz sizes.  Somebody is buying them.

If you want cheap and effective get a shiney 4 oz. lead torpedo weight and run a 1/0 Gamagatsu 510 assist hook through the eye. Tie your leader to the same eye and you have a VERY effective jig for about $1.25. I think the prettiness of jigs are done more to catch the consumer, not the fish.
Things lose color at depth and there isn't a heck of a lot of light at 100 feet. Noise and motion are what jigs provide.
This set up looks ugly but works GREAT!

as fate would have it, down by ano nuevo, i was able to land about 7 fish total including one shaker ling and a nice big vermillion. (i kept one fish this day) and the jig got all tangled up down below in its water grave! i had the 2 gamkatsu hooks tied to it just like a pretty butterfly jig and everything.

when that happened my heart sank and i felt like i just lost my firstborn.

what a bummer, i sure liked that jig, even though its appeal may have been more directed to me and not the fish!

next time, i am tying a 2 cheapo hooks with 20lb mono to a 3 oz bank sinker with a jingle bell from michael's (bags by the 100's for 3.00)

I am going to fish these home made jigs all day and see what happens. i bet i wont even lose one of em!

Tote,

I think you will find that jig on the bottom will get more lings & cabbies because of the noise.  Torpedo and an bite wiil get the rockcod.  But, the only way you will get a ling or cabbie is by hanging a rockcod down there.

johnguineapig, they often have one dozen (12) 6oz diamond jigs with single hooks and white hook trailers on ebay for $39 postage included. there is also that link that stu posted. personally I like fishing a lot of weird and different jigs just for fun,
(in which again, ebay is a source of some wacky ones) but if consistency and economy is your goal the dozen seems like a good way to go.

The only real way to find out would have to be by fishing side by side and see.

I agree with Mr. Tote. Fish are not the smartest, especially the hungry ones. You ever open up their bellys and find foreign objects? They see opportunity to feed and they will take it especially if it's dangling in front of their face (and even if it does not look edible).

Pretty lures CAN catch them, but why spend more when you can just make them yourselves with simple and cheaper materials.
