Hello,

After watching youtube videos on ocean kayak fishing by some of NCKAs, I think it's time for me to invest in a wetsuit.  Any recommendation where I can go to try on and buy?

I'm in Alameda and will drive 1 hour anywhere.  Thanks in advance for your reply.

Bravo - I don't go out on the ocean w/out mine! I bought mine at Aquan Sports in Redwood city - right off the high way. They had great choices, and were really nice/informative. I asked for the NKCA (10%?) discount, mentioning that this was my first wet-suit, and gave me an even better deal. I went with the Kokatat 'Farmer-John' suit - the selling point was the 2 way zipper on the FRONT (makes it much easier to urinate). I also use it while surf-fishing so I can wade out deeper to cast, etc. And knowing that Kokatat gear is made up in Mendocino County, I'm happy to pay a little extra for made-in-the-USA. Good luck!

i was looking to spend as little as possible and get something that would work for me (as most people do) so i went the used wetsuit route. I went to http://www.dolphinscuba.com/ on el camino in sacramento and asked  to see what they had in my size and believe it or not they have some wetsuits that are used that are in really really good shape. I spend 85 for a complete farmer john which was exactly what i was looking for. i bet they would have a suit in other styles that you could get for pretty stinking cheap. just a suggestion. and while you are there you can go to adventure watersports right next door and look at some kayaks as well! :smt001

P.S. get some thick dive-boots while you're at it. My feet get way colder than my upper body ever has on the water...

Check out nrs.com. They're having a sale on wetsuits and other kayaking apparel.

What you guys use for under and over farmer johns that will keep you somewhat warm if you go for a swim? I have a under armour cold long sleeve and once wet stays wet and cold.

Get an open-cell. They're in the $300 to $400 range but worth every cent. It will change diving for you. I never get cold anymore during a 2 to 3 hour dive. With my old suit, I would be shivering within an hour or so.

You could wait for the Sacramento Freedive Shop's annual sale in November. They usually have good deals.

Not for diving but fishing S-O-T yak. Something incase you fall in that will keep you warm enough and dry's quick.

Wetsuits are warmest when you wear nothing under them. You want just a thin little film of water between your skin and the suit.

The only exception to this "rule" that I know of are shirts, vests, etc that are actually made of neoprene (basically adding thickness to your suit).

I just wear my O'Neill 5/4/3 (surfing suit). Free-ballin'...
