Well, I decided to drag along my yak despite warnings that I'd be dodging jet skiers through 3-foot wakes.  Stuck pretty much to the smaller coves and docks on the Recreation Point side of the lake.  No joy at all, just a few weak nibbles.  Too many loud boats is my guess.  Still it was fun to get out and peddle along (not a typo - Hobie Mirage) despite the numerous boaters.  Took our 11-year old out on the back of the yak for some fishing...he didn't care that we didn't catch anything, especially after I showed him how to operate the kayak and let him scoot out alone for a bit.  The wife and our older boy took it for a spin for the 1st time as well and both loved it...might be easier to pick up a second yak now that she's expressed approval.  :smt023

So, no fish but a good time nonetheless.

Took our 11-year old out on the back of the yak for some fishing...

I've got a Mirage and I've contemplated putting my 8-year old in the back.  Where exactly did your son sit?  My guess would be sitting on the hatch with his feet in the scupper well...

Thanks,

Gordon

Yeah, I had him sit right behind me on the rear hatch.  He's a skinny 75 pound runt so I barely felt him there.   :smt002  I just left out my crate so he had leg room and we were good to go.   When it was time to leave the beach area where the family was I even hopped back there myself while my wife was driving.  That made us a little butt-heavy, as I'm far from 75 pounds, but we went about 1/4 mile to the launch site easily enough.

Took my dog out too, sitting in the same spot on the yak.  I was amazed that he stayed put.  Apparently he liked it though...when my wife and I pedalled back I had the kids walk him back to the campsite.  We arrived 20 minutes later and I noticed that the dog was missing.   :smt009  I freaked out, naturally, since he's my best buddy.  We searched the area for 20 minutes before one of our friends found him - back at the beach.  It was a good quarter mile hike away, yet he found his way back there.  Our friend said he was standing in the water, looking out at the lake in the direction my wife and I had pedalled to.  Out friend had to physically walk out and pick him up, he was so dead-set on waiting for us to return.  :smt007 I love that dog!  :smt003

Bummer about all the boat traffic but always a little fun busting through the wake and splashin. I just had a good workout doing that @ Oyster Point when the winds got up!

About having a passenger on the back of an Outback, my wife rides all the time. I bought a boat cushion and she sits on the rear hatch and puts her feet in the tankwell. But she usually gets tired of sitting like that and can turn around so we sit back to back. She can stretch out and gives me something to lean against. I'm sure the people at Hobie wouldn't recommend doing it but it actually works out well. There's a bit of water in the yak at the end of the day if we had a bumpy ride (probably comes in through the rudder line holes) but not enough to worry about.

That Outback is really an SUV!!
Looking forward to trying to sail it with 2 people, although it might be a little tight. :smt004 :smt001

Yeah, I considered the back-to-back option...figured it would be more comfortable on a longer haul than we did that day.  Also thought about picking up an extra seat and installing the necessary hardware to mount it over the rear hatch...but then I thought "maybe I'll just convince the wife to pick up a second yak..."

Not Japanese, but my wife is and I teach a Japanese style karate.  The "usagi"  :albino: comes from my last name though...the "PJ" is just my initials.   :smt001

I see you're local...I'm headed to Stillwater (Carmel) this coming Sunday if you'd like to tag along.  The more the merrier!
