Looks like something I will have to practice!

if you can find a shop and take a surf zone class, it will help you leap ahead in the learning curve. I've done several over the years and always learn something.
Monterey bay Kayaks, Kayak Connection, Headwaters...they are all reputable shops.

We shot two more surf zone how-to videos with Jim Sammons earlier this summer. He's excellent in the surf. Maybe something useful in here, although we deliberately focused on the basics:

Surf launching:

Surf landing:
http://www.kayakfishmag.com/videos/caught-on-film/kayak-surf-landing/

I love shooting fishing kayaks in the surf. A rapid-fire photo sequence reveals a lot about kayak performance. You can really see which boats spear and which pop. Tail submersion is another interesting thing to watch.

Wearing a helmet, very nice. Good for folks to see. Lots of stuff can bounce around in the surf zone.

The last minute looks nasty.

If those guys had seen Jim's video, they would have probably made it.  The inside brace really works, even in shorebreak like that.

Linda Mar in Pacifica.  Nov 2012.  I couldn't sprint effectively due to a big tumor residing at my spine but I made it.
