broach & brace has saved me more times than I can count. In a fishing SOT I'm more about landing clean than I am surfing. The main thing is to avoid a yardsale or a broken wrist or shin.

+1 on that. You can only side surf when the surf is small and on a gradual beach. On steep shore breaks like Limekiln and Monastary your chance of successfully side surfing a SOT is pretty much 0%.

This technique has saved my bacon several times at Gerstle.    It did me no good at all at Bolinas.  I felt like a pin ball.

Agreed. Sometimes your only chance is a few seconds of window to get in and get yourself out of the danger zone. There's no surfing at Monastary.

For myself on the bigger breakers  if I get caught sideways I point my feet towards the shore and lean back making a t.

If I'm surfing a sit on top, I want thigh strips. Controlling the boat with your hips is a must. If I was launching in surf consistently I would add them. Personally, if I want to kayak surf, Im grabbing my whitewater yak, I would rather roll than swim and chase my boat. One of these would be even better:

Thanks for sharing my vid!  :smt006  The surf was pretty small that day but hopefully it shows how effective a brace can be in keeping you from dumping in the surf.

Nice !!!    That had to be a very rare day for conditions like that up along your coast.

This video was just posted on the TKF forum.  Those Gulf coast breakers stretch out a long way, making for quite a battle getting past the breakers.       Keep in mind this is his first time trying this kayak in the surf...
