I'm a newbie myself, as this was only my third time out kayak fishing....but I brought along another newbie - one of my co-workers that had never been kayak fishing.  We went to HMB and paddled out to the red buoy looking for rock fish.  We marked quite a few schools, tried quite a few baits, but nothing would entice a bite for the 5+ hours we were out there.

Saw several other NCKA members as well.  Didn't look like anyone was doing much catching today.

HMB can be hit or miss when you are new, keep at it.  You will find them.

I posted in the "Hookups" section prior to going.  Not sure when I'll have time to go again.  I have every other Friday off, so those along with holidays will probably be my best opportunities, since I have other obligations most weekends.

My first time out of HMB, which was only a few weeks back was definitely a hit.  My brother and I scored limits of blacks with a few browns mixed in, as well as a 23" Ling.

Yesterday was a beautiful day.  Water was mostly flat, except for when the wind picked up from the east causing westbound wind waves colliding with eastbound wind waves, along with the swell - things got a little turbulent for my liking.

Head out past the reef into about 60 FOW. Line up with the north green can and the south green can. There is a ridge there and the blacks and blues were thick on Sun. I lost at least five nice lings too. Big one I saw just under my yak. It had the tail of my swimbait and let go just under me. It was at least 33-35". Use a red shrimp fly for Rockies tipped with squid and a 6.5" Seniorita big hammer for he weighted end. Only fished a little before the memorial and had close to a limit of blacks in very short time. Don't know how I kept losing the lings though.

I’m a newbee too.  This was the 3rd time out since I bought my kayak from mooch.  Me and Brutus skunked out too.  We went out late Yesterday, and were on the first set of reef south of the entrance.  The waves were breaking just a bit big for me.  We used metals, swim bait, & evne half purple worm on a size 2 hook (it never fails).  Did even get one hit.  Then ran into a non-member from Oakland in a red Hobie Revo.  The dude had a ling, 5 cod, & and  king fish.  He was using anchovy on a 3’ drift leader with 8 oz sinker.  I thought that was a bit heavy, but what can I say.  The funny thing about the whole thing was he can’t really tell if it was a rock or sand he was on.  From looking at him, he was on mostly sand.  I'm tempted to go back out later on this week.   :smt013

When you say a ridge, is the water shallower.  I was out there last year on an inflatable with no dept finder.  Saw a member pulled up a good size cab in the spot you are mentioning.  I'll give it a try later on this week.  Looked pretty calm for the next 3 days.

By the wash rock area it is 0-15' deep. Keep going out and it slowly drops off. When you get to where I have had success on the only two times I've been to HMB it goes from 30-60' in about 10' span. Long ridge/drop right there. Fish the face of the drop.

Although this weekend if headed into HMB come early and expect heavy traffic leaving. HMB pumpkin festaval going on sat/sun and lots of tourists and traffic. Especially if the weather is as nice as it is now. swell only 1-2 sat. I will most likely go out sat if anyone wants to join.
