My wife and I are about to celebrate our lucky 13th anniversary :smt008. She chose a couple days in  Monterey and insists we take the kayaks....gotta love her.  :smt007

Does anyone have any recommendations  for kayak-friendly (ie good and safe parking areas) hotels in Monterey?

I just wonder if I could convince her to let me go fishing one day.....

Thanks for any recommendations.

When I go to Monterey I usually end up staying in Marina. My thinking is that I am basically looking for a place to sleep and shower and I don't need anything above that. The Best Western and Super 8 in Marina are my go to spots for cheap hotels. Both are nice, have pools and you can walk to Marina state beach (good perch fishing). I have kept my yak there a couple of times and never had a problem. Of course I wold make sure it is secured with a lock to my car. Plenty of parking and a decent restuarant across the street make it that much better!

Thanks to both. I am still amazed 13 years passed by so quickly. I am a lucky guy. She actually likes that I fish. She says it makes me a happy person, so go do it. Can't beat that!

Ok, so how about some of the locals recommending a hotel in Monterey or PG? This is not a "place to crash and shower" sort of deal that I'm looking for, but more like a "last blast before the baby, kind of romantic" sort of thing. Last chance to build up the WAF. I'd normally just go for the Hyatt or Hilton, but the reviews of both of those places are not good at all, especially for three star hotels. I'd like to keep it to about $200 for the night.

Travel lodge is a cheap scuba hotel...I bet they'd welcome kayakers too.

Ok, I just got back. I left the fishing gear at home and focused my wife and our succesful marriage. Bill got me thinking about Marina. I didn't want to go cheap, but we didn't need to stay in Monterey either. We don't do gifts on our anniversary and favor spending the money on a nice place to stay and a nice dinner.

We stayed at the Marina Dunes Resort. It wasn't cheap, but we only stayed one night. The grounds were secure and patrolled according to the kid who checked us in. I locked the kayaks up anyways. The view of the ocean is superb. The rooms are very nice. The beach is a short distance away.  You could get any number of massage/spa treatments if you liked. They do require you to drive golf carts between your room and your car, which is kind of nice as it keeps the noise down, plus you get to try your racing skills out.

We launched at the park on Cannery Row for a morning of Otter watching. My wife is a major otter fan and she was not dissapointed. We saw several otters and several otter pups. Two moms were quite focused on cleaning their pups. It was quite a nice morning of kayaking.

Anyways, it was a wonderful couple of days. Take it from an experienced husband, you just have to know when to leave the fishing gear at home and make your wife smile.  I think I got major WAF points on this trip.  :smt003

Thanks to all for their suggestions.

Marina Dunes is the place right across from the Best Western and Super 8. We ate at the restuarant there, forgot what it is called.

Scott, I am not a local but my go to swank hotel in Monterey is the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa. http://www.woodsidehotels.com/monterey/index.html

Right on the end of cannery row. MBK beaches there rental fleet right under the hotel so if you want to go for a paddle you can. Great food in the hotel plus all the spa stuff your wife and you can handle. Not cheap but a great place to stay.

Ya, the best part about staying in Marina is AJ Spurs, the restaurant. It is right next to Marina Dunes...which offers 99 dollar rooms for Monterey Co locals. I've put my parents up in there with the discount before and it was awesome! Then they upgraded to one of the condos with a hottub on the deck...overlooking the ocean!

If you want somewhere that is somewhat fancy but not too pricey...go to the Portola Plaza, in Monterey. It is right at the end of Alvarado St...which is THE place to be (bars, clubs, shopping, and fancy restaurants) And Peter B's Brewpub! Plus its well within walking distance to the wharf.

Thanks for the info guys.

The Marina Dunes was booked, so we're in at the Monterey Plaza.  Ouch.

But my wife is very, very appreciative. Now we just have to hope that the baby doesn't show up ahead of schedule.

And yes, I have permission to fish early Sunday morning while she sleeps in :)
