"Split V" racks

Does anyone have an experience (positive or negative) with this kind of simple roof rack? I am looking to get something that will very occasionally be mounted to the roof of my wife’s vehicle for my Ride 135. This type of rack seems simple and affordable, has anyone ever used one, and have any advice?

Never seen those before, but looks decent enough.  For occasional use you can't go wrong with a good ole pool noodle and a few tie downs though.

With a 90lb kayak, I need something that will keep the kayak from slipping sideways, and give me a positive point to connect the ratcheting strap to, with the standard factory rack I can pretty easily damage the rack just tightening it down...

If you tighten it down enough to damage the factory rack I think you are tightening it too much. Also, don't use ratchet straps! Way too much pressure when tying down a kayak. 

The only place you can easily attach a hook onto my wife's car leaves the hook itself bearing on fancy trim on the exterior of the rack, which I dimpled a few times when I first got it up there. When I get a rack that keeps it from shifting around, my compulsion to tighten the straps will also decrease. Right now I have Malone x-large pads, but they aren't as wide as the high spots on the hull, so the kayak inevitably shifts. These V racks look like they might hold the kayak from sliding AND provide some pick points that aren't covered by beauty rims, without breaking my (meager) bank. I was wondering if anyone had used these and if there were any downsides?

No hooks needed on kayak straps. You just need to use a strap with a buckle on one end.

Instead of the cross bar on the factory rack use the long front to rear bars, the one fastened to the roof. They are stronger than the cross bar.

Just don't leave those cheapo "luggage straps" outside if you live near the ocean. Because fog & salty air will ruin the spring...and that's all those straps have...a little spring. I use these luggage straps AND ratchet straps. Haven't lost a kayak yet!
