I had to be off the water by 11:00, so I planned to get an early start, like 6:00am. But, due to various delays, I didn't get started until almost 7:00. It turns out that was a good thing, since I was directly in the path of a couple of whales as I was pedaling out towards the mile buoy:

As for the actual fishing, for me the only thing worthwhile was one respectable (and very feisty) vermillion. But, who cares about fishing when there are whales? (Am I allowed to write "who cares about fishing" on NCKA?)

Yeah I stopped fishing for 20 minutes just to watch the whales today. It was my first time seeing whales that close. I was stoked! Fishing was tough in SC today but calm waters and whale sighting was worth the 2.5 hour drive for me. I was still able to get my rock limit but nothing to brag about. Mini tacos is on the menu tonight.

I think those were Humpbacks, couldn't tell for sure because they are so "far" away with a go pro camera.  Did you happen to notice a double spout - 2 blow holes and bumps on their back just ahead of the tail.  Also Humpbacks have very large, usually white pectoral fins.

Just saw some a few weeks ago in the Bay of Fundy

yeah, there have been humpbacks in the Santa Cruz area for the past few weeks. I saw a pair (mother & calf) on the 5th off of Blacks beach.

Yes, I'm pretty sure those were humpbacks.

Btw, I've seen them breaching out there on other occasions, which is really cool. But, it's surprisingly difficult to get decent video on the GoPro, unless they happen to come within about 20' or less. I actually filmed one breaching from about 50 yards away. When I later viewed the video at home, I couldn't even find them---and I know they had to be in there somewhere.

Nice video, great conditions, whales are always a bonus, as long as they are not landing on you!
