I have been trying to eliminate my crate for a while now. So after searching the net I found a lot of people back east going this route. I think for the first few trips I'll just drill and pin the joints until I get things where I want them. After that some will be glued others will be pinned for adjustability and disassembly. At that point all will be painted and short leashes added. What do you think?  Yay or nay?  Anything I should look at before I finalize?

I think it is a great idea. Go with it. After a few times out you will see if it flies.
I am looking at something similar for my wife's Cruise 12. It doesn't have flush mount rod holders, but not wanting to do the milk crate thing.

That's a slick setup Mike.
I also wanted to ditch the Plano box w/rod holders (ditched the milk crate yrs ago after realizing I couldn't fit two 20lb lings and 10 rockfish in the tankwell with all that other crap in there). Plus, less is better sometimes. Especially when it comes to the undersized tankwell in a Hobie Revo. There's hardly enough room for my fish, much less a crate. So I made some pvc rodholders that fit into the flush-mounts behind the seat...allowing me to carry 2 rods, a net, and a gaff while keeping the tankwell open.

One thing I'd suggest for your setup is maybe put some pool-noodle material inside the pvc to keep the rods secure & prevent them from bouncing around. I just cut some lengths of noodle, then hollowed-out the middle and gooped it in place. It works great.

Looking good.  The one question I have is "why so high"?  Could probably lower it quite a bit and still have usable tankwell, no?

i just rough cut the pieces long when I started with the intent on cutting them down. After sitting in it I liked where the rods were sitting. So I left it high I'm gonna use cotter less pins and try it on the AR and make sure the height is correct and the angles of the rod holders before I glue it.
Thanks pat I will look at doing that aswell

The flush mount rod holders are usually just held by well nuts or rivets. With the additional length of the pvc  piping, the torque generated if you ever roll your kayak in the surf will probably rip the rod holders out of your kayak.

I like to carry a lot of rods for freshwater but the problem with having them held up that high is low hanging trees, docks, etc. So far I've been lucky & haven't broke any that way. knocks on wood...... :smt005
