This from USA Fishing for SF Bay 9/19/13:

"James shared an interesting tidbit: A local biologist reports a tag from a white shark was recovered from Angel Island earlier in the week. This two ton 18 foot shark that was tagged with a transponder that records, location, depth and other data over a six month period. For all you wind surfers and Dolphin Club members: it had spent the last 16 days in a triangle between the North Tower, Angel Island and Alcatraz. Windsurfers tend to be a bit scrawny (I know: my brother-in-law Mike Godsey is the lead weather guru for a nation wide windsurfing wx forecasting site. You Dolphin Club members tend to have more meat)"

Anybody know further details?

Whoa! Wonder if the sea lions are following the salmon into the bay and the sharks just follow suit ??

When you say a tag was recovered; is that the actual device that was recovered or is that science lingo meaning you received some information but the tag is still attached to the shark?

That's what I would guess.

That's all that was posted and I was hoping someone might have more details as it is unclear.

Funny (or not) because most people tend to think they're immune to GWS attack inside the bay (I tell myself that all the time).

One of the earliest recorded fatalities was just outside the Gate at Baker Beach in '59:

Examiner reported on the tags but no more details, really:

It's a data recorder, found on Angel Island, so it's not on the shark anymore, 16 days in a tight triangle, doesn't seem quite right, sounds like allot more info is needed to make any assumptions.

When was it found, which 16 days,

GWS are known to come into the bay ocassionally,

Interesting!!!!

It's raining like hell at my house right now, very cool indeed.

The recent tagging work over the last decade or so by the Pelagic group researchers showed some GWS entering SFB at times.

I read a book as a kid that I still have (Shark Attack by David Baldridge, 1974) that reported the earliest recorded attack on a human in CA was by a tiger shark in SF Bay in July 1926.  Seems kind of strange.

The findings lend credibility to a long-standing theory that a 1926 attack on a boy in blood-tainted waters near a whale-processing facility close to Oakland was the work of a great white shark.

Thanks Aaron - always seemed more likely to be a GWS.

With the reports showing in the bay for that long, and no report of it actually being taken off a shark directly, it seems more likley that the tag was loose from the animal and was floating back and forth in the bay currents. Even though these animals enter the bay, it doesn't seem likley that they would linger for any extended period inside the bay.
Than again, I'm not an expert on GW behavior and could be way off.

That's what I was thinking hopefully  the Scientist were smart enough and they thought of that and looked at the depths directions and speed and ruled that out.
