Caught a bunch this weekend, kept them to use for bait, but wondering how some of you guys have eaten any and if so, which way tastes the best.  Was thinking of just frying some up.

They were all over my sardine at the MBK event, I pulled up 10-15 at a time on my sardine, while the squid only produced 2-3.  I guess they prefer the sardine.    :smt001

What I want to know is how you deal with them in the boat?  I would make nigiri out of them personally.  I believe they are steamed then sliced.  I've heard of folks battering and frying them like calamari as well.

My inlaws in Alaska pickle them but that just doesn't appeal to my tastes!

They were a bit annoying to deal with at times.  When I pulled up a couple at a time, they were easier to manage.  When pulling up 10-15 at a time, that was tricky.  I had a big gallon ziplock bag I was putting them in.  The trick was the keep the bait under water, hand line the bait in, quickly pull it out of the water and into the bag.  The moment they are out of the water, they would let go of the bait and into the bag.  I had a major fail one time when I missed the bag and the whole ball of octopus dropped onto my lap.   :smt044

So you just put then in the bag alive?  Dispatching them was what I was wondering about.  I would think they could be pretty difficult to subdue.

I kept some and cut off the heads, pulled the beak and grilled em.  I probably would not target them but will gladly eat them if they offer themselves up

A Commercial Fisherman friend gave me a 5' octopus which I cleaned, cut into legs and head, and simmered  slowly in salt water, garlic, and vinegar for an hour or so.  It shrunk by half in cooking and tasted fantastic.  A bit like calamari, but much tastier.  Make sure not to cook to the point where the suction cups start to disintegrate.

When pulling up 10-15 at a time, that was tricky.

I take it this wasn't a typo because you wrote it twice.  So how many octopus do you think you encountered?  How many did you land?  Lastly,  what was the average size?

When you had 10-15 on a single bait, it must've looked like a writhing blob.
