My guess is the spill is causing fish to die and the predators are eating the dead fish, like a fresh fish buffet for all the hungry predators.

Molasses Tsunami???? Quote from same article

"Molasses can kill people, too. On January 15, 1919, a 50-foot-high tank in north Boston broke apart, unleashing 2.3 million gallons of the stuff on the city, according to the EPA (PDF). Traveling at an estimated speed of 35 mph over two city blocks, a wave 15 feet high and 160 feet wide wound up killing 21 people and injuring more than 150 others, causing damage estimated at the equivalent in today's currency of more than $100 million."

You're on that island now, right?

Yes, flew over the Honolulu harbor on the way in Monday and didn't see anything that would indicate anything was wrong there. Didn't see any boats trying to contain or clean the spill. Looked like a regular day. The water was clear and blue.  Haven't watched TV so haven't heard anything about it.
