RIP  :smt011 Yet another Kayak death due to no PFD :smt012 Avoidable :smt009 Another widow :smt010 Fatherless children  :smt010

MY PROMISE...

I Ron McGuire (Change to your name) promise to wear a proper PFD So that I can give others time to rescue me, or, in the event of my death on the water, no one will have to search for my carcass wasting time, money, energy, not to mention endangering themselves to find me... I owe this to others in the community in the pursuit of my recreational pleasures. Don't be mad at me When I badger you if you get on the water without one, because I care about you and your family. Seriously and sincerely Signed, Ron McGuire, Weimarian

Take the pledge or make your own. In our group or not, let's stop this from happening!!! Beat the non wearer senseless on the beach... You might be saving his/her life :smt002

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I was involved in a search and rescue 20 years ago as the RP, the guy who was lost was a buddy who insisted on continuing a climb in fully deteriorated whiteout conditions.  He was found alive, well, and extremely lost seven days later.

As I was relating the story to his mother, she was very upset with me for allowing him to go.  I told her that the only way I was going to stop him was to beat him.  I now have his mother's standing permission to beat his ass.

So when you are the only person standing between someone about to do something incredibly stupid and dangerous, when diplomacy fails, kick his ass.  His mother would want you to do it.  You can get her permission later.

Oh the irony...

On a serious note...I will definitely not be on a kayak without proper safety gear, especially while in the ocean/bay/river.

Before I joined NCKA I was amongst the non believers of pfds.  There were so many good examples being set.  I had to fall in.  I always wear mine now.

So when you are the only person standing between someone about to do something incredibly stupid and dangerous, when diplomacy fails, kick his ass.

A few years after college an old roommate was pretty drunk and wouldn't give me his keys. He insisted on driving himself home.
He being 6'3 and 280 lbs was no easy task, but a quick left followed by a hard right had him down long enough for me to get his keys.
I gave him a ride home.
He called the next day wondering where his car was. Didn't remember a thing.
I told him what happened. He wondered why his jaw hurt but thanked me because he was still drunk when he woke up so could only imagine how bad he was that night.
I don't feel right w/o my PFD OTW.
Same with driving in a vehicle. I gotta have my seatbelt on. Saved my life once already.
You might not look 'cool' in a PFD, but nobody looks cool dead.

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I know one person on these boards that may owe his life to my wife. At an undisclosed location on the coast a few years ago, the person in question was insisting on launching without a PFD,  Linda marched to his car, grabbed his PFD and handed it to him.  That day, the person in question and his fishing buddy both went in the water.
