I've recently switched from egg sinkers to the plastic sinker slides and tear drop weights. Does anyone know what the tab on top is for or is it just flashing from the molding process?

i'm an idiot. its a cotter pin.

The line may be wrapped around the T tie to secure the slide sinker in a fixed position.

i know i've seen people put the hook on it while casting to make it a little tighter for casting purposes, but i don't use it at all.

I always thought it was for hanging the hook.

Close ;0)
That piece is for you to wrap the line (on the rod side) around when casting with a big chunck of bait. This will keep the weight from sliding up the line during the cast. When it hits the water, it pops loose and you don't have all that slack line to reel in.
