Tom Stienstra doesn't want you to know that he was arrested for growing weed

So he is suing a blog in small claims court Siskiyou County for $10,000 for defamation of character.

Tom Stienstra, Chronicle outdoors writer, was arrested for growing marijuana a few years back.  He thinks that the world will think less of him if that is public (the blog shows up on the front page of a google search for "Tom Stienstra", so he is suing for defamation.

I suspect that his lawsuit will not have the intended effect.  There isn't any dispute that he grew weed.  The article isn't defamatory, and the blogger is just good at SEO.

Tom - put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Or maybe its all a publicity stunt?  Anyway, this is silly.  I'd go fishing with Tom any day.

I remember when this story came out a few years ago.  Big deal.  Let it go Tom--this is California after all .  Nobody cares.

Stienstra, 55, was arrested March 25 after sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at his home in Weed and found a “sophisticated cultivation operation” in his barn, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Susan Gravenkamp said in an e-mail.

Deputies allegedly found 31 immature marijuana plants, 29 mature marijuana plants and 11 pounds of processed marijuana, Gravenkamp said.

I really don't care. I don't smoke pot. I don't grow pot. But if somebody wants to grow weed in their barn I can't see how that is harming anyone...

Perhaps you meant that the illegal grow operations in the forests is horrible for wildlife....not growing pot in general.  I think those mex cartels and other illegal growers are definitely not concerned with the wildlife and environment....probably the least of their concerns when you're facing major jail time.  Pot growers aren't the problem, the ones doing illegal things are the problem.  I'm not trying to defend anyone, I don't grow, but the people I know that do grow pot definitely aren't destroying any wildlife. 

Sixty plants in a barn isn't the problem. Stealing water from an elementary school to grow your dope and forcing the school to close, on the other hand, is.

People are pretty messed up, but it seems like what Tom was doing was pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things.

I would argue that if it was legalized, there wouldn't be Cartel farmers inserted into national forests, poisoning streams and wildlife, instead it would be grown safely in commercially regulated farms (like they grow tomatoes, or any other vegetable) and there wouldn't be the profit in it to do crap like that.

Grandma growing a few plants along with the Oregano would pretty much shoot the heck out of weed being worth any real amount of money, the stuff grows wild, and while I am sure that there is some skill in growing some strains, it is not skilled labor like growing/curing tobacco for cigarettes or fermenting grapes for wine, you grow it and dry it and you are done..

Right now the Cartels have every reason to keep weed illegal, to keep the price as high as they can get it, and honestly we have set up a system where our Law Enforcement organizations get billions per year in State and Federal budgets to wage "The War on Drugs" too, it behooves both of those organizations to keep weed illegal.

The Dorito and Cheeto lobbyists just don't have enough funding to fight that...

I am almost surprised this guy got busted up there, from what I understand growing weed is kinda just what most folks do...
