Hi Guys,
I'm one of the kayak spearfisherman who hangs out at the freediveaddict forum alot but I have met some of you at multiple "pay it forward" events via BigJim. Actually my wife and baby son did too. I have to say yours is one of the warmest crowds around. Really looking forward to meeting more of you and learn from you.

I have been spearfishing in Aegean/ Mediterranean part of Turkey since young but although I have lived here for a while, I have started kayak spearfishing in California a year ago. Very different needless to say but I'm enjoying every bit of it.

And here is my first question: what size (weight) of anchor is appropriate for nor-cal conditions? I use kelp clip most of the time but would like to get an anchor as well for those halibut adventures where staring at the sand for long periods of time is required.

And for entertainment,

Here are few of my older dive videos from agean:

Hey Omer!!!

Feel like I haven't dove with you in forever dude...let's get together again soon!

I've used anchors when there was no kelp around like in Winter, but never used one in just straight sand...I would think a 3.5-5 pound grappling anchor like this one would work well....this is pretty much the set up we used when we anchored the yaks offshore that day when we were looking for your lost gear...

http://www.amazon.com/KWIK-Complete-Folding-Anchor-System/dp/B0000ATY5P/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_2

You can always zip tie a dive weight onto it to get it a little heavier, or add a length of chain above the actual anchor....

An anchor style like this will catch in rocks on days when you are diving reefy areas and can't kind kelp, and should dig into sand if you are hunting for halibut?

I have one laying in my shed you are welcome to try out and see if you like it before you buy one of your own....I don't think I've used it since that day with you and chaeki...

Just let me know if you wanna borrow it.

Hope you and the family are doing well and that we get to dive together again soon!

Sincerely,

Jim

Thanks Jim. Great info. last time when we were looking for halibut in the sand we dragged our kayaks with us which was pretty easy but just in case an anchor will help for some of the situations you described.
Yes, let's dive together soon.
You totally got me excited with that hali you got.
