My buddy Levi just put together some of our photos and video clips from our kayakfishing trip to Baja last year and I just put it up on the net to share.

Well, Levi will be there at Elk.  So maybe if we can gather enough photos for him he'll put something together for us.

I think we caught a total of 35 different species of fish on that trip (and ate about 25 of them).

Oddly, we didn't catch any barracuda and only caught one sierra (two of the most common fish around in May according to Gene Keira's "Baja Catch").

I tried to count the different species but lost track fast.  Awesome trip of a lifetime!

I wanna go back to Baja and do it Bodega Crew style!!!

I can't remember the details, but we where down there for almost 4 weeks and only spent a total of $500 per person.  That's the total cost including gas, insurance, licenses, tourist visa, kayak registration, extra tackle, food, liquor, and the occasional camping costs.  We often slept on public beaches (ask around for the "playa publico"), we ate what we caught (plus some eggs and veggies from town).

A typical fishing day...

Wake up at dawn, paddle out and fish until 11 am.
Eat the fish we just caught.
Siesta.
Eat more of the fish we caught that morning (if we had any left)
Fish from 5 pm to dusk.
Eat more fish.
Drink.
Sleep.
Repeat.

Occassionally, we'd be ready to move on to the next place.  In which case our travelling day would be as follows..

Wake up.
Pack.
Drive for 3-4 hours.
Stop and eat at a taco stand.
Drive another 3-4 hours.
Stop and eat at a taco stand.
Drive until we made it to our destination.
Fish if there was any daylight left.
Set up camp.
Sleep.

Oh, and we really wanted to catch lots of different fish, so we brought things like ultralights and small hooks to catch the really small baja fish.

Very Cool... I like how he got the undewater footage on some of those catches... probably a little easier to do that when the water is bathtub warm.

great report!

chuckE, you should go, I know you would like it, especially since you like to catch and eat lots of different things and you can camp. I think the mooch would really like it too.  It's great to have your own vehicle down there.

It's real true you can do it on the cheap too.  And a little money can get you stuff you could never get anywhere else too. I rented a 32 acre ranch for 6 months for $800 a month once.  :smt007

A lot of people go down for the whole winter, people that work summer jobs in canada and alaska, but don't work the winters because they do stuff like be hunting guides, forestry fire man, etc. In the winter it can feel like an outpost of british columbia. makes you want to live that life sometimes.

I meet a lot of people scared to go, but I never had any problems in baja, only in the states.  people do need to expect a different culture, it is not disneyland, but with an open mind and being a little flexible, you will do just fine.

since I'm a surfer, and I like the weather cooler and smaller crowds my ideal destinations are a little different, but I'd like to do the pacific midriff areas, bahia de viscaino and 'the pacific transition zone', the abreojos reefs. I have been to both before, but not for extended periods.  The fishing and exploring would be great, but it would not be marlin catching.

My brother is a skiierfrom CO, but I used to drag him along and he'd catch a lot of fish while recovering from surf attempts.  that's actually what got me fishing in the first place. Him catching whopper halibut from the beach!  I got pictures, but they are just prints in albums, I would need to scan them.
