Never no where you are safe in this world , a lot of strange people. So sad 

I know...my wife is super hesitant to meet new people and make new friends...and I am often the exact opposite...

I don't wanna go through life thinking that everyone I meet could be a monster...

We can't keep an eye on our kids at all times...

Hey Jim, I hear ya man. Making friends and spending time socializing is what life is about. And I do that. I just make it a rule to NEVER leave my daughter alone with ANY guys. That way it's not a big deal, nothing personal. We are always surprised at who the offenders are in these cases. It could be a family member or a friend, a teacher, a clergyman... a surf instructor. I PREFER to think of them a mentally ill rather than monsters, easier to not hold hatred or fear in my heart. It's clear that there is no way to predict or decide who's safe. I don't let her drive a car, I don't let her play with guns, I don't let her be alone with men. She's just not capable of deciding what's safe and what's not. When she's 16 we'll readdress it, seriously.

P.S. I am aware that this behavior is not limited to men. However males are statistically FAR more likely to perpetrate these sorts of acts.

Haven't followed this story, but I hope the SCPD has something a little more solid than this. Because it sounds like he didn't actually 'do' anything, other than invading their privacy. A crime for which he should be punished. But I don't know all the facts. Either way, this dude sounds like a total scummer.

Outside court, prosecutors said the case started on Aug. 3 when a 17-year-old girl told police that she had inappropriate sexual contact with Greiner about four times when she was 14 and 15 years old.

She was concerned that Greiner might take advantage of another underage girl who lived with her mother and sister as roommates in Greiner's Modesto Avenue house, Vazquez said.

"She did not want that child to suffer the same fate as her," Vazquez said outside court. "She was also concerned about his consistent access to young people at his surf school."

You can't isolate your family-your children--without them resenting you and fighting back.  In my experience up to a certain age say 4 or 5 ,  don't let your kids alone with somebody else that you don't trust.  Talk to your kids about inappropriate touching of their bodies.  That way, if say uncle pervert gets drunk  at a family function and does something offlimits, your child can tell you and feel he/she is doing the right thing.  In my opinion it is best to be proactive about sensitive issues rather than reactive.

yeah, and they apparently got recordings from the dressing rooms at his shop too. Plus other stuff off of his home and work computers.
It's such a bummer when someone who is considered a stand-up type of person turns out to be a predator. I have no idea how bad this case is, but it sounds pretty bad.

teach your kids to defend themselves.  Make sure they know what is OK and not.  These asshats tend to not go after the confident, strong willed kids.  I don't hate this guy, just want him to go away.  Forever.

A background check sounds like it would have come back clean on this guy. I'm surprise that you are surprised that people are calling for blood. Everyone who knows a little girl or who has ever known a little girl imagines what he would do if someone like this ever targeted her. Getting medieval on his ass is a natural desire.

What sticks with me more in this thread though is that someone as giving with his friendship as Big Jim is showing even a small hesitancy regarding trusting others and considering that there may be some mystery factor regarding who people really are.  Good on you, Jim and others, for being conscientious about it, but please remember to trust your instincts! 

When I find myself expressing a deeper feeling here (or anywhere), I do so because I've discovered that the community contains many individuals who are receptive to hearing 1) the truth; and 2) good things regarding how and why we do things that we love - including doing things for others and with others.  If possible, I believe it's a good M.O. to surround yourself with people who express themselves about what they are doing and why they're doing it.  It's not just a show or a billboard...  Someone's demonstration of their own character should entail some exposure of feelings and motivations, and that should naturally lead to an illustration of who one really is.

We can fight these things, just as we can fight any bad aspect of society - it's about the idea that being closer and drawing feelings out of ourselves and others is what we need, not just what we have an option to do or not to do.  IMO.

Probably started with porn and just couldn't stop... Opportunity to peep at girls at the beach started an obsession and sickness spread from there... So sad, so wrong, watch yourselves guys...

You are so right on this!  So many people say viewing porn is harmless.  Well, it isn't.  It just desensitizes men, some of whom move on to other means of arousal, including illegal behavior.  Every girl in a porn vid is someone's daughter.  How anyone who has a little girl of their own can ever find porn arousing needs to get right with themselves.  Honor your wives, girlfriends, daughters and the other women in your lives and don't view that stuff.
