Don't mess around shallow because if there's any swell there can be significant waves breaking throughout the Cove & until you get some time OTW you're better off staying clear of all that. TC is one of the few places I've been pitched out of my kayak due to steep breaking waves on the edge of the kelp.

I hope you guys busting balls about white sharks are all buddies...... :smt102

is there structure under water that causes it to break or something? when i make it past that everything is cool for the most part? im just more concerned if there is unseen dangers that i need to be aware of. still being new to going to the salt i am still am trying to read that water and understand it all.

Just head straight out and don't f**k around in the shallows next to shore and you'll be fine.
ok understood, but may i ask why? i like to know the reason behind things although i will take your advice all the same.

Ask Sledge.  :smt044
LoL...there's rocks that will catch you unaware...last yr i got flipped and was able to get out of the wash rocks with out to much loss...when leaving the beach go strait out...depending on he tides you will see that on both sides the waves tend to break but up the middle they dont...pretty easy in and out...lots of places to Get Some...50-75 FOW is great for lings using Big Hammers sardine or hollween are my go to colors i use andy1976 4oz jig heads they rock!!! Lucas,
I am razing you a little. But there's always a chance to have a run in with a GWS when your on the salt. You need to accept that and think through what you might do if it happens so you can react as calmly as possible. Chances are you may never have a GWS encounter. If me giving you a hard time is too much I will stop.

WetBTE. Aren't you the guy with the Jujitsu Tat ? You should be able to wrestle the Landlord into submission.  :smt044  No worries dude, more people get ripped up doing Gracie style floor work than the Landlord ever hurt

lol man this is a different kind of fear/concern. i can handle my own against any normal man that wants to "tussle" but when something has teeth like that... its a whole different ball game.

Did someone say Jiu Jitsu? Now I'm interested!

We joke about the GWS issue because we ALL have that fear.  It's nothing personal, just the guys having a little fun.  But it is something to think about.  I carry plumber's putty in a plastic bag in my dry bag for the sole purpose of plugging bite holes.  No other reason but I always have the putty with me and that is not a joke.

Be prepared and have a great time!

Josh

Yeah...I'd be lieing if I said I didn't occasionally hear "the music" while swimming around in murky water sometimes...my speargun gives me some mental comfort but realistically I know it would not do any real good...

But if the fear and worry were ever present I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get out there....I get out there to have fun and feel free, not to feel scared and worry.

I dunno man...I think each person needs to decide for themselves if going out in the ocean is worth the risk or not...there ARE sharks out there, and yeah some areas are sharkier than others, but ALL areas have the possibility of a shark encounter.

Just my worthless 2 cents.  :smt002

Sincerely,

Jim

I only wish Prius drivers had the same fears about driving on the highway that you do for getting in the ocean!  :smt005

It's going to be fine just quit thinking about and get on the damn water and catch some fish!

And with all that said..................I think TC rates really low on the shark sighting/encounter list.  I know over the years there have been sightings in the area like right outside of Stillwater N.  But really if you're gonna fish the salt off Ca coast I think TC has gotta but one of the least sharky places.

I haven't been up this year but in past years there has been a path thru the kelp from the launch out to safe water.  Stay way away from the points north and south and there is a shallow reefy area immediately to the left of the beach launch.  Also watch any area you plan to paddle into for awhile before you go there if you see waves building in any area stay out.

If you're going this weekend chances are you're not gonna be out there alone.

No one has ever been hit at Timber Cove. The only fatality that I know of was a dude that ate a whole scallop during a quarantine. We watched the rescue chopper pick him up. He died before he got to Palm Drive in Sebastopol.

Just watch the north reef out of the cove for 15 minutes or so. Give it a wide berth. The next cove up above the totem pole is cemetery cove. If you get north to the big round rock covered in white head straight out on that reef. Watch the wind and watch your back. You will be fine. Be careful and have fun. You cant get experience until you get on it man. Fuck the naysayers.
