Kayak Angler Early Summer 2013 edition recommends Cobra and what it looks like the HH300 model but while looking on line it doesn't seem to have good reviews??? Any advise on a reasonably priced floating VHF radio?

I love my standard Horizon HX 300. It charges from USB so I can charge it from my car stereo with USB in.

I had a Icom M36 but wasn't happy with it so I exchanged it for the Standard Horizon HX851.  I've been happy ever since.

The icom m24 has a really solid feel to it. Doesn't feel cheap and does as it promises, floats and flashes when it goes in the water.

Looks like it is in between iCOM and Standard Horizon then. Knowing I will go ocean fishing weather alerts could be interesting.

I haven't seen comment from Cobra's owners yet. I will be interested as I will have a tendency to believe Kayak Angler Magazine (unless their gear review was more advertising...)

I have a Standard Horizon HX 300 and a Lowrance Link-2 DSC VHF radio. Not many kayak fisherman know about the Lowrance radio or the great features it has like GPS and Track-Your-Buddy. My 2cents.

The floating Icom unit is great as long as it is leashed on your pfd where it belongs..with you when you enter the water. Unless Icom redesigned it don't leave it in the charger past the Green Light fully charged indicator....it will fry the middle contact and weld it to the charger. Maybe they changed things...hope so. Just trying to help.....not knocking the unit. We switched to the Icom M72 unit.

ps Patrick and I have purchased the extended warranty through (darn..can't think of it now but will post it in the morning) for all our kayak electronics and it has served us well.

+1,000; A VHF should, at the very least, be attached to you with a leash.  I have the M88 and it's small enough that it fits inside my PFD pocket and I have the microphone that sits up by my ear.  LOVE it.

Have Standard Horizon HX-290.  Floats and has worked well for me. Used it at Albion with my buddy Bill. Second day on the water we decided to give one to the wives at camp.  Sure enough Bill's non floating, nontethered went in the drink.  He is now shopping for new (and I know reading this  :smt001).  And yes the wives did try and contact us.  So I will also be purchasing another radio for base camp duties...
