Pretty sure that is NOT a smallmouth but rather a pikeminnow or squawfish.

Northern Pike minnow, formerly known as Northern Squawfish. The name was changed about 10 years back, to be politically correct.

But what is not politically correct with squawfish?  And I'm all for PC, but where do we draw the line?  Are we concerned with hurting the fish's feelings?  BTW, Dale, I'm not attacking you.  Just venting and threadjacking at the same time.  :smt003  :smt002

Dilbeck, no offense taken. I struggle with "the line" myself.
It is my understanding originally the word squaw  simply meant woman. Nowadays it seems to have racial connotations.
They renamed Squaw mountain in MT to be PC. And Whorehouse Flats in Oregon became "Naughty Girl Meadows". The list goes on.
On a similar note, Catch and Release is considered PC. Until you examine it. " You tortured a fish just for Sport?" You might at least have the  decency to kill it and eat it. If fish (especially Pike minnows, as they are voracious predators with several states offering bounties) have feelings, they would understand that.
Now, back to the thread_ I have never understood Pikeminnows to be edible (we threw them on the bank as kids), but maybe I am not being "PC".

Congrats's, you caught a native fish!  People put them down as a fish to catch, but it is one of the few native fish of California.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

+1.  Of all the native California fishes that are suffering hardship, it seems the Sacramento pikeminnow continues to thrive.  Probably even moreso these days with the abundance of warm reservoirs allowing them to grow bigger and faster.

A friend of mine ate pikeminnow once.  He said it wasn't that bad steamed.  But he's also the same guy who gave me dehydrated halibut that he thought was great, and I thought was  :smt078.

I've caught tons, but never eaten one.  In the quest for truth, my next pikeminnow will be harvested and consumed.  I'll post up the process, good or bad!  :smt001
