Are sit in side kayaks safe to go fishing out on the ocean with?
I love fishing but do not love getting drenched and was considering getting another kayak so that I can put a spray skirt on and have the top 2/3 of my body warm and dry.
Thanks

Very safe and comfortable too. Make sure that there is some layer of thermal protection to protect you from cold ocean temps in the event you end up in the water.

I think the safest things we carry with us is our knowledge on how to self rescue.

Do you men rolling?
Wouldn't rolling be hard with 8' poles sticking out?

It all depends on the type of SIK you use. There are many sea kayaks you can use. The only issue is where you put all your gear.

What I'm trying to say in the event that you are out in a sit on kayak and manage to end up taking a swim accidentally,  the faster you can right your boat and re-enter it the better.   NorCal's cold ocean temps do not take long to start to cause low levels of hypothermia.

There is only one person that I know that can roll a sit on top kayak,  or at least I think if anyone could do it,  he could.  Right Victor?

What is a sik?
im guessing victor means..Sit Inside Kayak. I personally wouldn't do it. Sit on top yaks are 99.9 % what we use. I guess your yak could work if you know how to barrel roll....with all your gear. For lakes it should be fine. I wouldn't recommend it on the ocean if your new to yak fishing. Just my opinion though.  Hope to see ya on the water!

I don't use a Sit inside kayak for fishing but I know of a few people who do. I think a sit on top is the best way to go,
If you are not familiar with kayaking.

Here is a blog for a buddy who fishes out of a SIK:

I've done most of my fishing in a sit inside kayak. They are as safe as you are skilled and follow safe procedures. I would be far less worried about getting back in my sit inside than getting out cleanly if I do take a dive. You aren't going to roll your sit inside while you have a fishing pole in your hand and not the paddle so you will need to do a paddle float, buddy or cowboy reentry. That can pose a problem because we fishermen usually have all kinds of stuff strapped to the back deck making a cowboy which is the best reentry impossible. So if you are using a sit inside you need to keep your back deck free so you can do a reentry which means you can't carry as much gear safely.
