Has anyone launched at McClures on Point Reyes?  The best local salmon bite is at Elephant Rock off there, but it is 4 miles from Lawson's and very exposed around the point if any weather comes up or the Tomales Bar get's wild.  From the photos, McClures seems to be a shallow gradient beach and we are having very calm ocean conditions for a few days.
Also is the trail smooth and graded all the way down...no flights of steps, very rocky sections ...cliff drops?

Trail is long and steep in places, personally I wouldn't even consider it.

Using Google Earth it looks like .6 miles with a 300 ft elevation change, not bad for a a hike, also the trail in many places isn't wide enough for good use of wheels.

Beautiful spot tho,

Thanks.  I haven't been there since we used to hang glide off the south cliff.  We would usually land on top and I don't remember the trail that well.
Do you have any idea of the best salmon prospects from a yak now?

It's a great idea. It would be good to try it once just to see how bad a haul it is.

You might be better off going to Abbotts lagoon on ten mile. It would have to be a flat ass ocean though. I've seen some monster breakers there and at Mc Clures. You also might be better off launching at Bolinas and trying out Dux area.

I scoped out that launch about 5 years ago. It's doable. But launching and landing will be tricky as there's usually two lines of breakers even on small days, the trail is cartable but pretty steep, & those are some of the sharkiest of waters. Ultimately, the effort to pull a kayak laden with gear back across the sandy beach & up that steep narrow trail is the deal breaker. there are too many other easier launches to fish. of course there once were some crazy men who kayak fished and dove for ab's at Horseshoe Cove so.............
