I am tossing around going to Bodega Bay, not for salmon or anything but to stay in relatively close so i can just get used to the ocean and everything. I over extended myself my first salt trip and had a horrible experience, so now i want to get back into it but creep my way out there instead of just jumping full on into it. i planned on jigging the jetti and dragging some squid across the rocks but is there any areas out there i should try?  any kelp beds that way that i should know about? to halibut hold up in the bay usually? ANY information would be helpful. thanks in advance

You'd be surprised at what that jetty holds. The biggest ling I've ever hooked was at the end of Doran jetty. I've even caught decent verms from there.

With all the bait in the area, halibut are worth a shot, too.

Just drift bait and toss lures parallel to the rocks.

To fish the Jettys you're going to be launching at the base of one of them. You can launch from Doran park, or from Campbell Cove.

I have it on good authority that if you drag a 5-gal bucket of chum and que up some Seal yelping sounds on your iPhone,, you'll see something :fish:

When you said "horrible experience" does that mean sea sick?

There are actually some good structure on the way to the red can, but be aware of where you are since there's an MPA area over there

Both jetties will produce 12"-14" blacks right now. Especially the longer one that is connected to bodega head. The inside last 1/4 is the best. The end on the beach side for the Doran one. Legal lings are pretty common too. While I've mainly caught blacks (pretty easy to catch a limit this time of year) there are cabs, greenling, blk/yel, & grass. I have never seen a verm but did hook a nice thresher last fall. Hali's are there but not in the numbers like tomales. The key for the blacks is timing. Low light conditions-early/late. Fog can help extend this bite. I throw 1/4 leadheads with almost any plastic on 10-15lb bass gear. Live bait caught inside the bay will help your chances with a flatty.

If you wanna paddle a ways several of the wash/boiler rocks in front of the estero also produce. Good luck.
