Hey guys :smt006
My work finally ended and I am heading to Shelter Cove. I am taking an Old friend of mine for his first trek on the salt with a kayak. I am sure he will be "hooked" and be a new NCKA member soon (especially since he bought a wetsuit just for SC yesterday!). Anyhow, I know that it is very short notice, just figured we might get lucky and be able to meet some brethren there.

I have seen some of the other reports and info posted; mooching the whistle and trolling out from shallow water. watermelon apex and all the other stuff. Anyways, any more info would be appreciated. We will probably be all about the salmon right off the bat and then switch over to rockfish afterwords.

Hope to see you otw!

Good luck. Drag a Chovie around behind a flasher.  Remember to fish barbless hooks for rockfish if you catch a salmon first and have it on board.

Right now I hear the best technique in Shelter Cove is using jigs like pencil jigs.  The charters and others are doing this.  They are getting both their salmon and rockfish limits on the same rig.

This is real fresh info straight from my friend who lives and fishes there all the time.

On a side not my friend and I may drive to San Diego and go on a multiday trip for Bluefin.  There have been some really good trips going on lately.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be looking for Bucks (not in any backyards:p) too since archery season is open in that zone. I am planning on keeping one of the deer I get this year strictly for NCKA potlucks.
Thanks again bros.

Hopefully I'll get some fish (and buck) porn to share.

Good luck boys, looking forward to a great report.
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

What do the jigs look like/who makes em? I'm heading there on Tuesday and would like to add some of those jigs to the arsenal.

I would use 4-6 ounce jigs in silver. The long skinny ones. Maybe put in vice and give a little bend for irregular dropping action. Don't forget to change out the hook to single barbless. Others may chime in with better recommendations.

I will leave a few of those jigs on my porch for you, if you get this before you go. you will need to change out the hooks like RacinRob said.

I watched the charter guys jigging Salmon at Shelter Cove a week ago.  The jigs appeared to be white in color.  Does anybody know the specific name of these jigs?  I would like to get a few but don't know what to look for.

I you are jigging isn't it a requirement that you have to use circle hooks?

Good question.  I think the circle hook needs to be used when using bait so that you hook the fish in the lip.  If jigging there is not really a chance of the fish swallowing the hook.  The regs do say that barbless circle hooks must be used if angling by any other means than trolling but I don't think that jigging for salmon was considered.  I'm interested to see what everyone else has to say.

If you are verticle jigging the regs imply that barbless circle hooks should be used, however, jigs can be trolled so what I do is use a barbless J hooks and slow troll them with periodic stops. This allows you to meet the trolling requirement and still work the verticle column.
