No more Fort Ross???

Are you crazy? We SLAYED 'em on Saturday at Fort Ross. Bob got a huge ling, too.

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

thanks for the report, so were you not able to get out of the golden gate or was it a problem coming back in?

was it a strong current?

The wind and tide both really plow through the gate.  If you want to paddle out, pick a day when the tide peaks around 11am.  Then it'll suck you out and put you right back in the early afternoon.

Once the wind picks up it can really roar, the only time I paddled out the gate the wind was stiff enough on the way back that the kayak planed down the faces of the incoming swells and I could almost surf them all the way back.

I'd be interested to do a group launch at the GG - when the conditions are ideal - just so I can "brag" to my non-kayak friends that I did it  :smt002

Besides braggin - it's cool to see the launch and areas where you fished in all those GG photos - a real plus when you're stuck out in the middle of the desert  :smt006

BTW - gbgf, launching from FT. Point and fishing under the GG, you'll find some structure and RF - though this area gets alot of pressure from the Party Boats. I use to live in SF and would fish this spot as much as the other end due to the easy access.

I've surf fished there a few time and each time i was there it looked calm enough to launch a kayak. The water current look prity strong thou on the out side.

I would be willing to try it some day with a group, like Mooch said.

Great job and attemptI would love a group launch there, huge stripers hang at the south tower, lings at the north, ive allways heard. Tide timing and size critical, of course, probablt too hard to get more than a couple of passes, but what a trip that would be to kayakfish under the golden gate. Make for some wild pics, fish or no fish. Fish with a magnet and land a handgun!

 info from  Hobi-Wan Kenobi

Launch from the boat ramp (by the Coast Guard Station) near Ft Baker.

I would do this on a day w/ small tides as you can imagine all that water rushing from the Bay through GG makes for extreme currents. These currents will effect you if you go to the middle so stay relatively close to the sides as eddys will keep you from flying out the Gate.
I'd time it toward the bottom of the outgoing and then drift out to Pt. Bonita, then on the incoming it will be easier to get back to your launch.

Areas to Fish:

On the way to the GG, you'll see to large rocks. There's lings in this area and a ling hole in the smaller rock (check it out). On the back side are plenty of boiler rocks. I'd fish in it in my Hobie but in a conventional, I'd skip it cause if you get snagged up, it'll be hard to avoid the rocks and trying to fish at the same time.

Under the GG by the north tower you can catch lots of Rockies and Lings. Use a large (6oz to 8oz) leadhead to get to the bottom fast. Cast ahead of your drift so that your line is vertical to your yak when your swimbait hits bottom. Also use 20lbs Power Pro to keep your line down. If you're hooking up, make several passes (don't leave fish to find fish). Otherwise move on to...

The sandy areas past the GG - great Halibut spot. Keep an eye on your FF for sandy areas mixed occaissional w/ rocks - prime spots. Work around the areas (sandy beaches will indicate the areas to start w/). You may want to add a stinger hook to your swimbaits for increase hook-ups.

As you head toward Pt. Bonita you'll encounter larger submerged rocks which will have RF, lings, MFEELS and Perch.

GL and let me know how you do.

I was watching Myth Busters last night (couldn't sleep) anyway they were testing something about whirl pool danger.  Anyway the Coastguard took them to the GG bridge to look at them.  Appearantley the Bay and the GG have some of the largest and most whirlpools in the US.  Some the whirlpools/underwater syphons had a diameter of 6ft.  Just something to think about in a kayak.  When we going?

I've been eyeing the above weekend...Not a lot of movement 10am - 3pm or so.  If conditions are still sketchy, it still might be worth a try to drift/troll for salmon or stripers from the bridge inland along the shore towards Sausalito.
