Hi All,

Due to California Vehicle Code 9400 (Truck Weight Fees), I have to sell my Thule Xsporter rack. Like myself, very few people know this law... by default all Trucks in California are registered as commercial vehicles  (trucks have only 1 letter on the license plate). So as a result, we are all paying the commercial registration fees when registering a truck in california. However, if you put a camper on your truck, you can go to the DMV and register it as a passenger vehicle and obtain passenger plates (3 letters on the license plate). When you do this, you save a significant amount of money annually on registration fees. For my truck, I save about $400/year.

I purchased my truck used from a private owner about 5 years ago. He had registered it as a passenger vehicle but he took off the camper before selling it to me and did not bother to tell me that I needed to change the plates or put on another camper. So I've been driving the truck for about 5 years now in the Bay Area with no issues. Last month, I took it up to the eastern sierras for the first time. As I drove through Angels Camp, sure enough a CHP Cruiser chased me down with lights flashing. Luckily the officer only gave me a "fix-it" ticket. I had two choices... either surrender my plates or put a camper on the truck. I chose the latter as it would save me a ton of money annually.

Long story short, now I have a new camper on my truck and I have to sell the xsporter rack. I've only used it to carry my kayaks. It's an awesome rack that can be installed and removed in a few minutes. Light as heck also. It costs over $600 new.

Please PM if you're interested. I'll post this on CL after a week if I don't hear anything from you folks here on NCKA.

Yeap... I learned it the hard way. I just got an officer from Alameda PD to sign off on the fix it ticket this past saturday and he actually said that he would have never given that ticket out cause it's just stupid. It's just one of those things - you drive in the big cities and the officer have better things to do, but then you go out to a small town and those officers there got nothing else to do but nit pick. Funny thing was, the CHP cruiser was parked on the side of the highway and as I drove past him, I looked over at my brother and joked to him that I wouldn't be surprised if the cruiser pulled out and chased us... I'll keep my mouth shut the next time.

That's good to know. I need to see what the savings will be for my truck being as I have a camper on it.

Ever since I got stopped by the CHP, I've been keeping my eye on all Trucks with Campers on them. I've only spotted 2 trucks with campers that actually have the 3 letter passenger plates. My guess is that about 90% of us don't know this.

I'm meeting up with an NCKA'er tonight for the $$ and rack exchange. If everything checks out, it's sold. If not, I'll let the next person in line know.

My old toyota has a xsporter system, and it is very good deal, they are not cheap but they do get the job done.  The only thing I would avise when installing it is if you plan to add bike racks check the length of racks before you mount as racks tend to be much shorter than truck beds.
