I been meaning to get into Yak Fishing after watch many videos on YouTube. Great stuff. At first I was going to buy a cheaper SOT yak from let's says Sports authority. They do carry OK. That I could get at a good price as a friend works there but after seeing so many at Kayak City today & seeing the at Headwaters Kayak I think I'm gunna go with a Tarpon 120. But I did luck up the perception pescador 12 angler & west marine pomponio(however you spell it) I looked up other but I know most here have name brand Yaks and don't really care to talk about the cheaper ones. Anyways can't wait to come a cross a good deal on a WST120

There are a couple of folks on the boards here that are reps for different kinds of kayaks and different shops, the best advice anyone gave me was to look around and get out and test-paddle as many kinds as you can, and see for yourself what features work and don't work for you alone.

I don't think that it is as much that folks don't want to talk about lesser expensive brands, its just that lots of folks (not including myself here, I'm a noob compared to the FOG's here) have had SO much experience, they know that your budget is better spent buying a used "name" brand than dropping the same amount on a new walmart yak that will crack or leak like a sieve the first time you look at it funny?

Anyway, jump in, look around and welcome! :smt003
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

I think that the reason that most don't talk about the lesser known and sometimes cheaper brands is that they just don't have enough experience with them to give an opinion.

Take your time, do some online and in person research, and test paddle as many as you can before you buy.

Welcome Robert, +1 on the above advice, I have been only Kayak fishing about two years, we bought all of our kayaks used, and now that I have been doing it awhile, it's time for a upgrade. Now I know more of what I want and need for my next yak.

WTTM (welcome to the madness) Robert!

Good advice, try as many as you can and find what's comfy for you in terms of seating, paddling, hauling around, deck layout etc.

The "name brands" should rise to the top as you make a search, as they are proven fishing platforms, with years of experience  in design and manufacturing.  So, fewer defects, and better warranties.

Man thing is, get a yak get out there and FISH!!  Even if you get some no-name pop-out you can go out and have fun.

check threads on this site  for lots of yak brand/review type info.  Also check kayak Fishing Magazine tons of reviews and stuff there.

And, finally, no matter what yakyou get, invest in quality, reliable safety equipment.  Wetsuitor drysuit a must.  PFD even bigger MUST.  VHF radio reccomended...Read up you'll see.

And welcome

Welcome to the club Robert!

Like said above just do as much research as you can and paddle as many boats as you can. Most shops will let you rent and demo different yaks so you can get the feel for them and figure out which ones you are most comfortable with before making the investment.
