Yesterday's fishing report

7-10 Headed out again with Jaime to rid me of the "Salado". Jaime had fished right off of lands end "el Arco" the previous day and caught some yellowtails so we decided to give it a try first thing. Dropped down to 144 ft live bait drifting a "tortilla" (it's slang for a bait fish don't know the actual name). 20 mins into the drift hooked up onto a sizable fish. My rod went bendo and the fight was on. After approximately 20 minutes of horsing that bad boy off the bottom up comes this fat Cabrilla. I was very happy especially since this was my first ever after fishing many years in these waters.

We continued drifting and hooked up on a couple more really big fish but were unable to land them.

We then changed over to some jigging and landed a nice size skip jack that put up a pretty good fight.

After a short period the bite just died off so we decided to go and try some roosterfishing off of the Pacific side near the old light house. The water temp was 70 degrees when I had fished on the 5th of July and now after the storm that passed the temp was 78 on the Cortez side and 76 on the Pacific side .

There were some pretty big swells and the panga was riding them parallel to the beach as we slow trolled "tortillas", mullets (aka lisas) and google eyes (aka caballitos).

It wasn't long before the familiar comb of a roosterfish was splashing about on the surface in a frenzy as it was chasing our bait fish and making it panic as it fled for its life. The pez gallo inhaled the bait and I let him run with it while in free spool as I counted down the anxious seconds. 4, 3, 2, 1 then I feverish reeled in to set the circle hook. The fish immediately sounded then sprinted for the shoreline. The reel screamed as it continued to peel off line. 5 minutes into the fight the fish spit the hook.  :smt011 :smt010 Very disappointing moment.

We continued our troll again and 20 minutes later we had fish on again. It was another sizable rooster that just peeled off about 100 yards of line. This one I had on for about 10 minutes when the line just broke...........WTF ARGGG!  :smt013

Determined to get my pez gallo we continued trolling and within 10 minutes we had a double hookup. The fish on the second rod came off after about 30 seconds. The one that I had on was just peeling off line away from shore making the reel scream zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz for what seemed an eternity. He finally showed signs of slowing and I proceeded to reel him in. I would bring him in 10 feet and then he would peel off 15 ft. I would reel in 20 feet and he would run off 75 feet. Throughout the battle all I could think about was the other two bullies that got away. After 40 minutes I saw the slab of my PB roosterfish finally come to color as it came up broad side along the panga.

Jaime readied himself to grab the fish for a photo op but the fish wasnt done yet. It circled the boat a couple of times and as Jaime reached down for it the fish made a final dive that I thought for sure was going to pop me off. I wrestled him back to the surface and I yelled "AGARRAR LO CABRON!!!!" Jaime reached down and horsed the bruiser up onto the panga. I was jumping up and down like a little kid and was so happy to have finally landed the beast especially after the other two that were previously lost.  :smt005 :smt008

We posed for some pics and then release the fish back to his domain. What a fabulous day of fishing in Cabo.

I had the resort I stay at prepare some of the Cabrilla that same afternoon.
Blackened, Breaded, Coconut and Grilled....served with tortillas, rice, beans, vegatables, salsa, mango salsa and mojo de ajo.........muy, muy delicioso!!!

Hooked up with A buddy of mine to target roosters on the Pacific side.
We left the resort at 5:45AM and drove North towards Todos Santos. We turned off the highway and proceeded off road on an unpaved desert road towards the ocean. Once we hit the beach we continued down the beach in his 4x4 jeep about another mile.

We arrived on the beach and watched the sunrise over the Baja desert. It was very reminiscent of when i use to plug for stripers off Sloat Blvd on Ocean Beach in the City. But at the same time very different.

There was plenty of bait in the water but no signs of pez gallos. We plugged away blindly for an hour covering a lot of ground before moving on to the next desolate desert beach.

Unfortunately there was no fish to be had that day. :smt009

7-15

We left the resort again at 5:45AM and headed North on the same highway and 30 minutes later went off road on yet another unpaved desert road towards another pristine beach.

Equipped with twelve foot surf rods with reels loaded with 30 lb test we proceeded to plug our lures into the Pacific.

The sun was rising over the Baja desert casting its rays amongst the cacti covered landscape. The ocean temp was yet again unpredictable as it continued to fluctuate 5 degrees one way or the other making it hit and miss with the various species of fish that inhabit these waters.

After another unsuccessful hour of scouring the ocean with our lures we moved again to yet another beach I had never stepped foot on.
At this beach the target species changed to pargo and cabrilla. We climbed up and over this very craggy rock formation in flip flops.....note to self bring zapatos next time...... Nothing like climbing over a treacherous cliff hungover in flip flops. WTF was my amigo thinking????? :smt013 :smt044

Unfortunately there was no pescados to be had otra ves. On the positive side I got to explore a total of four beaches that I had never seen or even knew they existed. I got to wake up with the Baja Pacific splashing over me. Got to see a turtle nest on one of the beaches. Got to experience roosters foraging just past my casting reach. Got to see my buddies frustration first hand as he lost a huge pargo after it rocked him and broke off his prized Rapala.

Just knowing that a rooster is just another cast away is reason enough for me to return to this paradise para mas.
