Stores in San Mateo are charging a dime for a bag now, some sort of San Mateo fee.  No big deal right?  Wrong, me myself if I need a bag I pay the dime.  I swear this dime thing is going to turn me into some sort of Sam Kenisam  type that you will here on the news (for you younger guys, Sam was a great comedian who died to soon before his time, I am sure there are some yout tube clips).  Any way with in the last couple of weeks I have had about 5 incidents of cheapskates getting their feathers ruffled over a freaking dime.  A woman with a Tammy Faye Baker make up kit on her face is bought a bunch of wine at Trader Joe's last night,a nd got all up in a huff because the thoughtful cashier double bagged her stuff so it would not break.  the $.10 goes to the county, not the store, they are not making anything on this (so I am told from people who work for TJ's).  This lady is really upset, to the point that her over made body bondo face is starting to crack, and the girl offers to giver her dime back, but because the way the law is written, she has to get the bag back, which the lady is okay take it.  Now the Cashier, nice girl, doing her thing has to call a manger over to do that whole return of a dime thing, holding up the line.  As i am standing in this line, I am thinking to myslelf, if I had a dime I would throw the damn thing at cracked bondo face lady!!!! :smt013.  It is a fracking dime lady, it is not the end of the universe.  I am reaching in my pocket and looking, and I can't find a dime, but if I had one, the inner Sam in me would of come out.

About this time my neighbor signals me to come over to the line he is in, and rescues me from dime hell.  We had car pooled together to pick up something for dinner, and he is laughing, because he knows how much I hate the damn dime for a bag thing and the cheap ppeople who spend $200 on wine, but not a dime on a bag WTF?  I hope your single bag rips and vino crashes to the pavement el cheapo! Have a nice day!

For the reord, I think the no plastic bag thing is a good thing, but the way San Mateo and the resulting cheapskates are handling it are unrealistic.

kinda similar thing that makes me laugh a little is when you see people that drive escalades or new tahoes or any expensive vehicle... but if they ever get into an accident they opt to keep the money for the repair rather than get it fixed... so now they have a "nice vehicle" but cant afford to get it fixed. i shake my head and sometimes point and laugh at them just because they are ridiculous with their costly vehicles but don't want to pay anything to maintain it. lol

just like those lames that can spend 200 bucks on wine but they don't want to cough up .10 cents for the bag. pretty dumb if you ask me

I think what happens is they spend most of their money buying the vehicle they can't afford they end up broke unable to pay for repair costs. I personally know a few.   :smt011

I wonder what she would have done when she realized that she was paying 0.05 per bottle for recycling fee.

maybe she  would have paid a dime and mixed all 6 bottles of wine in the bag.  20 cents saving and a new Trader Joe's blend.

My cousin did  this. Bought a 2011 Escalade, spent $$$ on fancy spinner rims etc, then stacked it in 2012 and bent the frame. Last I saw it was still sitting in front of his house, looking good but non-operational (won't steer 'cause of frame being bent) and he was driving a $200 beater toyota. :smt009

The bag thing seems like such a non important issue to stress over.
Reusable bags, what is the problem people? Wash 'em once a week & you are good to go. Seems to me like there are many other things that are more deserving of actual outrage.

Some People Children :smt003
The first time i was charged for Groceries bags was in 1988 in Germany .15 pfenning I " was surprised" then! Went to a Macdonald and ordered Royal Supreme and Pon frits (Big Mac and fries) asked for catchup and that was .25 pfenning for the little packet. Even more surprised! This paying for grocery bags and condiments at fast food restaurant, has been happening in Europe for decades. It was bound to happen here in the states.

I always try and bring my own grocery bags  when i buy my food and i always like to see theire faces when i tell therm I'll bag my own groceries.
Maybe some body at Trader Joe's will come up with the old idea, Take A Dime- Give A Dime :smt001

I've gone one step further... Green and all... Saw a documentary years ago showing the amount of waste from Fast food!!! Cups and packaging was an eye opener!!!!! I have been using the same 64oz cooler cup since 09 and had another that broke as far back as 1999... Think about it, if you counted the 2-3 (6-7) times a week you eat out by the cups tossed in the trash... Metric tons of trash, plastic, Styrofoam... Plastic bags are the devil  :smt003 they end up everywhere! So a dime to save some birds and dolphins is ok by me but I do have cloth bags in the trunk.... It's a philosophical decision and a conscious change most won't make 'cause they don't think about it.... Toss a dime, hell buy her a trader joe's bag with a smile and she would think about it more and possibly change....

Railing over the problem never helps, but educating in a kind way can change a person and situation to a positive experience for both people :smt007 Some times people just suck :smt005 Never know till you give them a chance to prove themselves one way or the other... :smt002

I get it for sure.  We had a fence next to our office that was adjacent to a grocery store.   It was covered with those plastic bags and it was an eyesore.  The city owned the lot and would not clean it up. I also despise those plastic bags as a means to carry food.  You are bound to end up wish smashed bread and bruised fruit.

All that being said, I think the County generally collects the money making this a tax in my mind.  I am not a fan of taxes especially when the store is forced to provide the bag but the county gets the money.  That is how they do it in SLO county anyway.

I can also argue against my anti-tax rant as you are not forced to pay it if you bring your own bag.

It pisses me off but I get it too

Sincerely,
Conflicted Eric

I support the bag fee, although I think they need to charge for produce bags as well, not just the bag at the checkout. Why do people need to pull a brand new plastic bag off the role for one apple, or a couple of oranges? It's lazy, and such a waste, as a lot of it ends up in the middle of the ocean.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

If more folks had THIS attitude,,, we would be a HELL of a lot further on, as it is, too many folks miss the forest for the trees, in their zeal to do SOMETHING don't realize that their something isn't really helpful, it just makes them feel better (ie. embodied energy) and they would rather force you to do it than rationally convince you it is beneficial.
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.
