23 years and 5 days after six firefighters lost their life at the Dude Fire (only 130 miles away in Payson), 19 brave men and women from the Prescott/Granite Mountain Hotshots lost their lives. Sadly, today will now live in infamy as the second worst loss of life wildland fire in American history. I would ask you all to take a moment of silence for not only these latest 19, but the many hundreds of others. Some we've all heard about; 72 men killed in the Big Blow Up in 1910; 14 men and women killed at Storm King Mountain in 1994, 13 men killed at Mann Gulch in 1949; 6 killed at the Dude Fire in 1990, the 9 killed on the Iron Complex in 2008. Others, are only known in regional areas. They all deserve to be remembered. I pray every day for the first year in history that no firefighters in the US are killed in the line of duty. An even better miracle will be no firefighters in the world!

RIP Brothers :smt010

My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families and friends...

I was stationed on the San Jacinto District when the Esperanza Fire tragedy occurred and took 5 firefighters. The community was devastated...

What made this tragedy even worse and harder to understand for me was that the fire was started by an arsonist and the 5 heroes died defending an unoccupied home.  :smt010

Sincerely,

Jim
