One month to go. Multiple pieces in the works! some big, some small, some indoor, some outdoor :smt044...and a few gaffs too.

Yes, the gaff and billy set are indeed carved with an orca and a salmon, respectively.

see 'em all during my participation in DoonArt 2013, July 27-28th.

Yeah! That place in Cotati where we stopped after GS!
They are Mustad hooks on the gaffs. I've since heard they may have rust issues over time, so I am building a couple from scratch, using SS rod to make the hooks.

no sane person could/would ever dream of ACTUALLY using those works of art on a real fish..would they?
I see them over a mantle or in a ManCave.

I don't know, but I build 'em thinking that they will be used :smt002

Most of the time my gaff just stays on the holder :smt044, so I figured may as well make one that looks cool while it sits there!

I'll post up more teaser pics as the date gets closer. I've got some other interesting things in the works...

just another bump.
I'll be on the local UCSC radio station 88.1 KZSC (where the tuition is almost as high as the students :smt044) at noon tomorrow to talk about art & kayaking & all kinds of good stuff.

Tseekis piece is finished, leatherback turtle is finished, redwing blackbird, Osprey with rockfish (FishMaster1 you remember that from GMS7?), two big garden fish (lingcod and sheephead), and two landing sets of gaff and matching bonker will be there. I'll have other stuff, and hopefully will get some magnets done this coming weekend since those were pretty popular last year.

Here's my write up for the show:

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sean Walker

Inspired by the lush and rugged Pacific coastline, I have been designing and carving wooden artwork since 1980. My inspiration comes from the coastal environment, specifically indigenous Pacific Northwest styles, as well as native artwork from Greater Polynesia.
I came to the Santa Cruz Mountains and established a workspace in Bonny Doon in the winter of 2000. With the mountain forest presiding over a well known beach lifestyle it seems only natural for me to blend these themes. My pieces end up as rustic forms of artwork while retaining some degree of complexity, suitable for interior or exterior display and enjoyment. Exterior pieces may fade or deteriorate over time, but this decay is part of the personality of each piece, as the art that inspired them was never meant to be permanent, but to slowly blend into the landscape of moss and forest.
The artwork is predominantly birds, fish, and marine mammals depicted on wood panels using paint, wood burning, and some carving to highlight the images.  Over the last decade my ocean adventures have blended kayaking and fishing together with increasing consistency, and my experiences on the ocean are mirrored in many of the pieces I produce.  Most of my pieces have stories behind them, and I’ll share a few here.
An early spring paddling trip along the north coast of Santa Cruz county brought an exhilarating meeting with a massive pod of Rissos Dolphins, large dark mammals carrying long white scars from the squid they feed on, and a large redwood panel eventually captured the determined attitude of these creatures.
A four day trip off the Humboldt coastline resulted in spectacular weather, and while my hunt for large Pacific halibut went unfulfilled, I did encounter many brightly colored lingcod. These two competing fish species are illustrated on two panels, a large indoor piece for the halibut, and a very large outdoor piece depicting the lingcod as a Tseekis, a traditional ocean spirit from the Pacific Northwest, often depicted as a rockfish of some type.
During those days I spent on the Lost Coast of Humboldt I watched an Osprey, recognizable by the dark stripe across its eyes, flying over the beach holding a black rockfish in its talons, presumably breakfast. This design eventually made its way onto a heart redwood panel built from slats that were originally milled in the 1930’s.
It was in preparation for halibut fishing that I stumbled across another form for my artwork, which was a straight gaff built to assist in landing these large fish from a kayak. I  spun off to other tools used in fishing from a small boat, to eventually make a few matching sets. The design of the tools allows them to not only function as necessary, but also to provide inspiration and purpose for the angler. On quiet days when the fish are elusive, motivation to continue on can be as critical as the sharpest hook.
I hope to see you the last weekend of July 2013.
