Molbasser,
I would enjoy hooking up at a later time but tonight is Carlos at the shoreline....
Besides I've used up my rations this week on fishing once Wed. and then yesterday. My wife and kids are good about my away time however, I need to be a Dad and husband tonight. When is the next trip and what would you suggest as far as fishing gear. I have a farmer john 3 mil as suggested also a few metal lures for rock fish having been rock fishing on charter a few times. I have a 9 weight fly rod or any other type of salt rod and reels. Just let me know. Thanks again Frank

I considered myself a decent veteran ( 6 years ) before I saw the kayak fishing video. I learned a LOT from it.
Like I say in all my posts related to newbies, find a lake where you can practice EVERYTHING in about 4 feet of water. Fall out, turn the yak upside down. Flip it upright from every conceivable angle. The bow, stern and middle.
The prob with a pool is that you have to worry about smacking your head on the side while practicing. Most pools won't handle the length of a kayak and you falling out without getting too close to the sides.
No worries in a lake.
Practice paddling your yak without paddles too. You will definitely appreciate a paddle leash after you do.

Have been going to a number of lakes and doing the usual fishing however I think your right I should try some of the emergency bails that you suggested. I have contacted a guide for some professional help before going out to the big lake....Recently hooked up with a few of Kayakers at Lexdington which was an absolute blast and want to do the same for the ocean without being a burden.  Thanks for your post, Frankfishing

Welcome! Taking a basic skills and surf zone class was pretty helpful. MBK has a nice one on Sunday's and you can fish some on the way back from the surf zone. A VHF radio is nice if you are going to hookup in the ocean and also good for listening to Molbasser and Mooch trash talk. Post your plans in hookup.

I have FOUR of the Crazy Creek Kayak III seats with the 1.5 inch foam padding. Got rid of all the other seats for all my kayaks as this seat rocks!!!!!

Frank,

You can also fish Quarry Lakes (Horseshoe Lake is the one they stock with trout & catfish).  Too warm for trout right now.  But they do have catfish right now and bass (smallmouth & largemouth).  It is in Fremont.  Buy a yearly parking pass for $50.  You can go to Del Valle, Shadow Ciffs and Chabot with it and save the $5 or $6 parking each time.  Good for a year from when you buy it.

Bring a anchor or two if you want to fish for catfish right now.  Anchor is also helpful for casting for bass...keeps you near the spot a lot longer than drifting.  Problem with Quarry is that it gets windy and no place to hide.

Forget the MBK skills and and surf lesson class. I just found out they are not supportive of fishing.

I read the reports and thank you to those who attend the meetings. I will steer clear of MBK until they are more fishing friendly. Since I am located in the east bay my outings have been mostly restricted to the local lakes...Chabot,Deville,Quarry etc. I am trying to hookup with either Duane or Allen for my first intro to the ocean which I am hoping will be soon. However, conflicting schedule have keep me to fresh waters :smt013. I am going to Chabot tomorrow 8/23 for trout with a friend on my tandem...thanks guys for all your help and the openness you have shown this Newby. Frankfishing

Hey nothing wrong with fresh water fishing, thats mostly what I do.   :smt045  But I do like the big water trips too.

Practice your self rescue, untill you think you have it down pat. Then do it a couple of more times.

Welcome aboard,

Craigh
