Blueyaker,
Thanks for your interest in helping me get started. Experience is the key and I'm trying to get some.I just watched the video on Kayak fishing and simpicity is what is stressed by the orator, Dennis Spike. I can see how it is important when entering and then for the exit. However, for me I think I'll invest in a few extra's and then do without as I get better acquinted with this sport. Have been in some pretty hairy situations that required more than just my natural ability, with this sport of Kayaking my ability is a big nada, nil, zip. I can fish but no can ocean Kayak yet.
So, Blueyaker I hope we can hookup  I would love to pick your brain sometime soon. Thanks Frankfishing

You only really need 1 fish finder per group as long as the guy with it knows how to use it, same with GPS and VHF, though usually half the people have them so there is a fair amount of redundancy.  Blue's problem is he doesn't fish with a buddy most of the time, and someone to help out in a tough spot is worth more than all the gadgets in the world - especially to a beginner.

Both kayak+shark incidents around here the kayaker was fine but the boat swamped in short order.  If you're alone that's a long, scared swim back.  If you have a buddy, most fishing SOTs can carry two in a pinch.  Blue is very experienced and I would be surprised if he swamped due to a beginers mistake like a loose hatch, but the landlord prowls blue's fishing grounds and doesn't differentiate kayaks based on skill.

I swamped in a tandem offshore once and I thought my buddy was going to die because he was wearing waders instead of a wetsuit.  We got ashore okay because the kayak had outriggers that kept us from tipping once the boat lost bouyancy, but that would have been a very sad day for a normal kayak.

Fishing with several people also means that you'll see and help land more fish (especially if you have a BIG net).  Having someone catch a fish next to you is almost as good as catching one yourself, and it lets you know you're on the right track.  2 halibut for 5 guys is much better success for everyone than 0 for 1!

Yes, this is a good thread. Frank, if you want to come out to the coast this (or any other) weekend, just let me know. Us rookies can learn some moves on our own! I am heading out of Bolinas with another newbie (he wil be in my SIS kayak) on Sunday, 9-3. Or we may go some where else if some one has a suggestion. I just want to get on the water and catch some more fish!

I think I'll do bean hollow this weekend, perhaps linda-mar if a group comes back with half-limits or better of salmon.  I could show some folks the ropes out there and the surf shouldn't be too bad by the looks of it.

This weekend isn't good for me we  suffered a lost of a family member so the gathering will take place at my house this Saturday. I had to cancel my appointment with Allen this Thursday due to the circumstance. Next weekend more doable. Frankfishing

Careful here Josh.  The way a lot of us fish together, we can be spread out over quite a distance and outside of earshot.  As much as I'll be there to help someone out if need be, I think it is best if they are prepared to help themselves out.
