Been looking at the forecast and have been seeing a conflicting forecast for the swell. NOAA shows 6 ft @ 7 seconds but others say like 3 ft @ 9 seconds. Anyone heading out this weekend? Should the conditions be alright according to what they predict? Thanks in advance I have been losing my mind just waiting to get back OTW.  :smt013 Oh yeah and how has the salmon bite been recently haven't heard much lately.

The Trinidad bite may have dropped off from last week's hotness, but the fleet's been off the water for the most part with the storminess that just moved through.

As for the forecast, NWS changed the way they forecast in the past year or so.  Instead of giving one number for seas (wind generated, harder to predict, and not always as significant for near shore) and one for swells (long range and more predictable), they now give a number that is the predicted combination of seas and swells.  This may be a safer method for providing a worst case scenario for boats offshore, but nearshore I've seen how their system can really be off.  Try using NWS forecast as a guide for worst case scenario for swell/sea height, and pay close attention to what they say the winds will do.  Use Stormsurf (http://www.stormsurf.com/locals/mendo.shtml) to see how the nearshore swell should actually be.  This weekend's 6' on NWS forecasts and very low like 3' on Stormsurf tells me that the NWS feels the 5-15 knot winds might put a 3' wind wave on top of the 3' swell, so if you're out in the wind and a ways from shore (over a mile or two usually) you may be subject to that combined height.

This weekend's forecast looks good for the mornings at least.  Powerboats at Trinidad often fish 3 to 5 miles off the Head.  Try around the Whistle Buoy.  Best of luck.  :smt001

rockfish has been real slow lately.  I put in 5 hours today with Jason for 2 blacks and one was a dink.  Herring did not get a scratch.  Big hammers didn't get much at all either nor shrimp flies too.

Hopefully you will have better luck than I have the last few times.

So the rockfish have been slow huh? That sucks. I think I'm going to go tomorrow but haven't set it in stone. Now I'm kinda tossing up trying somewhere else where the rockfish might be better. Never been to shelter cove, maybe crescent city I dunno. Probably still end up in trinidad though any suggestions? I'd really like a limit of blacks for the freezer.

If you got out of Trinidad, would it be for rockfish or salmon? Both?  I know the salmon bite is off, but want to give it a go this weekend anyway.  Can't catch fish unless you are out there, right?!

I actually decided to skip on the rockfish and head out for salmon with a buddy in his boat. Now the salmon bite is off too huh?

I understand the bite is not at all like it was Fathers day weekend and that the fish are deeper.  Doesn't mean you won't catch salmon!  Go get 'em!

The salmon bite is still there but scattered. Our group paddled out to 195' about 5 miles out due west and the bite was south a ways. cam3087 got the only king of the day, Sarah landed two coho and I only got a one bite for 6 hours on the water. The water was a little lumpy in the early morning but flattened out once we were out a ways. The wind did not start picking up until 11:30 or so. All in all it was nice day on the water with the bite between 130'-190'. Lots of silvers in the mix with a decent king bite at south west the head at 150' that started around 9:00a.m. that we did not make it to.

The bite is in close out of Eureka.  Many fish were caught between the bell and whistle shallow at 20-25 pulls.

I caught one 5 mile out at 156ft and 80 pulls down.  Hootchie/bait combo.

Watch your ff.  If you see a steady line below the bait chances are that's your salmon.  Thaats why I was 80 pulls.  The line was at 80 ft.  The water is warm so sometimes they go deep in the afternoon.
