We are looking for any information on second chance homes for dogs? We are looking for a place to send our dog Melo (Chi/terrier mix) to, without having to put him down. We are willing to pay any fees or donate to the organization that would take him.  He has bit a couple members of our family and we can't risk him biting our little girl. Recently Melo bit my mother in law and she needed to get stitches. The hospital had us fill out a bite report so I am sure that he will have to be under quarantine for 10 days. All the behaviorist we have talked to have said it can take 5 months or more to work with him and nothing is guaranteed. We would love to work with him more but we can't risk it with our little girl. Its a hard time for us but we would love to be able to find him a place.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe google "dog rescue"? We had a Chesapeake bay retriever that was overly aggressive. Found a great home for him. Your making the right call Vic. I'm sure you will find a good place for him.

Thanks Anthony. We have been on the web all day, looking. I will try and type in dog rescue and see what that finds.

Kids come first... Do what you need to do... It is hard but you are doing the right thing for your children. A dog that bites that hard can be hard to place and with a bite report doubly so...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

It has been my experience that a biter is a biter and there's not much one can do to train it out of the dog.  As sad as this is, your decision to protect your child is the only rational one you can make.  We once had a cat that was a biter and only after it sent my father-in-law to the hospital for stitches did we realize the cat was just a disaster waiting to happen.  The other issue is the legal liability you take on by having a dog that has been known to bite.  The damages awarded in some dog bite suits are huge and may exceed the limits of your insurance.  I hate to see pets put down but sometimes it's the only safe option. I can't imagine how you would feel if you gave the dog to someone and it harmed a child.

Vic -

You know I love dogs but I would put the dog down. Once you get on the dangerous dog list, nobody will take him. Plus the liability to you if some else get's bit. With a new baby, I think the decision is clear. I saw a 9 month old bit by the family lab mix today and almost lost an eye. PM Martin, AKA Yakuza, S.A., and whatever. He went through this with his dog.

Damn cute little dog too, a wolf in sheep's clothing. Isn't it a small dog? Small dog syndrome? Somebody with the right situation and time can give 'em an attitude adjustment. Sure its "just a dog" but maybe someone can save themselves saving him.

Amos we would love to find someone that could save him. It seems so hard though. Many of the places we have called will not take him. 99% of the time he is awesome, it's just that 1 % that is to much of a gamble for us with our little girl. I have never been attached to a dog before like him. It's such a hard decision that will have to be made soon. I know they will have us quarantine him for 10 days before we do anything. I know its going to be a long 10 days.

Second Chance Pet Adoptions website isn't very encouraging regarding to scenarios like yours. I know lots of people live with dogs behavior problems. I completely understand why you cant. You are smart and compassionate and face a sad choice. I hope a old timer with some thick skin who doesn't give a darn about Melo biting him comes forward and enjoys the hell out of his company.

Thank you for the input and advice everyone. Today is going to be a hard day. Melo was never a fan of fireworks anyways.
